Help: Transitioning to toddler bed

I am in need of some serious help. For the past 2-3 months or so, DS has been  cosleeping with us. Although I love the closeness, I really want to be able to sleep next to my husband again. Well, we have tried periodically putting DS in his crib, but after a few hours he starts to roll and hits his head and wakes up. Normally he will not go back to sleep after that either. So I decided that maybe we should get him out of the crib and put him in the toddler bed. Before DH would allow me to do that, I took the crib mattress out and put it on the floor next to our bed. Well I am noticing that the he still just rolls and falls off the toddler bed. Right now he is hanging off the toddler bed with his butt and legs off and his head on the mattress.

Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe getting a full sized bed. I am just concerned about him rolling off the toddler bed. Or do you have any suggestions on getting him out of my bed. I have tried the bumpers, but he just uses those to climb out of his bed.

Thanks.

  • We put DS in a full size bed two weeks ago and it has been the best. We have the box spring on the floor, he has toddler rails on the side of the full size bed. It's been great. It took him about 3 times of telling him to get back into bed- Good Luck!

  • My DD has been in a toddler bed her grandfather built her since the end of September when she was almost 18 mos. I do have a bed rail on one side and some firm pillows wedged on the other side to protect her head from hitting the wall. Originally it was just the bed rail but they I kept hearing her hit her head.

  • We went straight to a twin. Started with naps and let her decide when she wanted overnight. When J is out of the crib we will do mattresses on the floor. C had a cottage bed tent and we will get another for Julia.
