Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Powder vs. RTF - roughly same price????

So, we were planning to switch Grant (hopefully) over to powder nutramigen instead of the RTF (when we first switched to nutramigen he refused the powder bottles) - all in an effort to reduce monthly expenses.

We started calculating the cost and I would save $1.63 per day by switching to powder vs. RTF.

Now $1.63 per day (or 45ish per month) is nothing to be scoffed at I know, but I thought there would be a much bigger cost difference. Maybe it is just this particular brand of formula?

My math:

DS eats 36 oz per day = 252 oz/ 7 days

RTF  = 32 oz/can = 8 cans/ 7 days  = $73.28 (each can is roughly 9.18)

Powder = 16oz can makes 100oz  = 2.5 cans/ 7 days @ $25/can = roughly $62.00/ 7 days

  • My head just exploded from all the math

  • lol I know

    DH and I have been calculating this tonight and keep coming up to the same numbers ... depending on coupons, where we buy it, etc etc ...

    It seems to only be about 1 - 1.75 cheaper per day. Which, like I said, is nothing to turn down but I just would have thought it the price difference would be more.

    So now, I guess we have to just decide if it is worth the hassle of switching him and losing the convenience of the RTF for a buck or so a day.

  • We did the same thing. After i weaned her from bm i started with RTF (because that is what my so bought) then we went with powder but she wasn't doing so well with it. We did the math and it was about that a buck a day more so we just go with rtf. Also i see your in NJ if you are near a BJ's it would be cheapest to get it there bec ause they take manufacturer coupons! HTH
  • I don't know, but for us powder is actually easier as it doesn't need to be heated due to refrigeration.  Takes 10 seconds to make a bottle.

    This is what I figured out as well. I did RTF with DD#1 and now do powder with DD#2.
