J is soooo sick and congested. I have an rx the doc gave me a while back that I never filled. Well, I filled it this morning and hoping it starts working soon. I feel so bad for him. He sounds awful. I keep suctioning his nose which is even ticking him off more.
Anyway, I sent DH to the store to get a humidifier. He came home with a Vick's filtrefree humidifier. He said it was the most expensive Target has (men think that means the best, apparently). Also, he said the pharmacist recommended it because it's a cool mist instead of warm. I grew up with warm (boiling water) so this cool thing has me puzzled. Anyway, I just looked at the reviews on amazon and they're far from stellar. I don't have time to research further because J is sleeping on his tummy in my bed and I am nervous so I want to get back to him.
Does anyone have any recommendations please? I am at such a loss...
Thanks girls.
Re: vaporizer of humidifier?
Ive got a crane too and it feels like cool mist. This makes sense to me since our heater tends to burn my air passageways. So far, it seems to be working great.
We've been using a Crane humidifier since he was born and normally keep it on a lower setting, turning it up when he's congested. I think it works reasonably well.
Hope J feels better soon!

Both are good, there are just differences in how they work.
I think a vaporizer (warm) is generally better for colds, as like a steamy shower it breaks up the congestion. A cool mist humidifier is better for dryer homes (we also have a Crane in the Cow design) and when one has dry coughs, static electricity, etc.
I Googled and found some info:

Note: we don't use distilled water with ours, but we should.

Oh do I know what you are going through right now! DD started getting congested Wednesday pm. Thursay she was coughing & the runny nose started. She used to let me suction it but NO MORE! I ended up going to BRU & getting the NasalClear battery operated suction. She still doesn't like it but it works better than the manual one. The best time I find to do this is when she is eating. I sneak it up on her & she is usually focusing on her food so she lets me have my way.
I ahve been taking her into the bathroom & runny a steam shoer. We have had her sleep in her bouncy seat so she is upright. We do have the cool Mist humidifier. I think the warm one breeds bacteria, that's what i have heard. So I put her bouncy close to the humidifier. She seems to be alot better today. But last night really sucked for me. I didn't get to sleep til like 5am.
I hope whatever J has runs it's course quickly.
I believe that I have the Vicks Filterfree vaporizer that your DH bought. I hate it! Sure, there aren't filters to replace, but there is some dohicky ball thing that should be replaced periodically and. . . the cleaning/disinfecting of the vaporizer SUCKS. It is a 30 minute process involving vinegar and bleach (used separately). Total PITA! I'm going to throw it away.
My SIL uses Holmes vaporizers for her kids (and in their room too). You have to replace the filter periodically, but the parts that need to be cleaned go in the dishwasher. That I can (and will) do.
I found the Holmes ones at Target last week. They were on sale for $25 (regularly $30). Plus, it has a good hum to it, so its great for white noise too!
Hope your LO is feeling better soon!
Yep - that's the one. I am about to go take it back now. Btw, I love Grant's new pic!
Thanks for all of the help ladies! Headed to Target....
I know it's probably too late, but I just wanted to put in a good word for the Vick's vaporizer -- the hot steam kind.

All of the guides say you are supposed to use cool mist because of the risk of burns, but we only put the vaporizer on when she is sick, at night, and far enough away from the crib so that she won't get burned. You can't use the Vick's inhalant stuff in the vaporizer for babies, but they sell Kaz inhalant that goes in the vaporizer and worked wonders for Keira. When she was congested, she had been waking up a few times a night, and the first night I got that vaporizer, she slept 10 hours straight.
Good luck! I hope your LO feels better soon.
