Continuing rash from mosquito bites?

Miles got bitten by a mosquito in several places about a week and a half or so ago. The bumps from the bites will not go away. They looked like normal mosquito bites for a day or two, then like ant bites, and now they look almost like little bruises. When he was an infant, he also reacted to mosquito bites, but I don't remember it lasting this long. They don't seem to bother him, but I hate the way they look!

At this point, I'm starting to question whether they are going to go away on their own or not. Anyone dealt with this before?

  • Are they still swollen? All I can of is maybe ice them. If the swelling is gone, is it possibly from scratching?

  • They aren't swollen...the bites themselves just won't seem to clear. And I haven't noticed him scratching, but I could've missed it, I guess.

  • dd had a latent reaction to mosquito bites over the summer. they looked normal, then swelled a bit... then looked like they were going down, then got huge.  I thought maybe it was getting infected from scratching.   I took her in and they said the latent reaction and put her on 5 days of prednisolone and zyrtec until it faded.  one dose of the zyrtec did the trick.  I did do the 2 meds for 5 days and then that was it.  I had tried benedryl prior to going to the doctor and it did not work.  now we keep zyrtec stocked too.

hmmm? is it almost like chicken pox "scarring" ... sometimes they stay dark for a long time even though it's run it's course.

Yes! They are still normal sized, but look dark instead of red.

  • My bff's ds had something similar whenever he got bites. Turns out they got infected with MRSA. It was a mild strain of the bacteria, not like the scary stuff you'll find if you google it. I think they ended up needing topical and oral meds to make it go away.
