Can you use a heating pad....

while pregnant? My back is always so achy, and lately I have been using a heating pad on my back for a little while at night and it feels so good....Is it safe for the baby? I mean I know my back gets hot, but my tummy doesn't?

I just thought about this and was curious....

I think it's fine. From what I understand you just want avoid raising your core temp like in a sauna or hot tub.

I would ask your doc.  There is concern with radiation that can come from heating pads and electric blankets.  I have an electric blanket that I use to warm up my bed before I get into it, but I turn it off when I get in.  I asked my midwife about this and she said it was fine as long as it was turned off before I got in bed.  Maybe you could try a rice sock that you heat up in the microwave?  I use one of those when my back is sore.

I agree with Carollyn... Talk to your doctor. I know that a bunch of heat in one spot isn't good either.

I do use a rice sock all the time, especially at work, after I had been doing paperwork all day I had to use one by the afternoon or there is no way I would have been able to ge through the rest of my shift.I would ask dr. I have heard different opinions about this...

I was always given the advice (my dr) while pg to put something between me and the heating pad (ie: a towel) so it wasn't in direct contact with for any length of time. Your dr may say otherwise..

Thanks girls! I have only used the heating pad a total of maybe 4 times, so I will call my Dr on Monday and ask....I usually only use it for at the most 20 mins or so.....I am sure the baby is fine, but I will make sure the Dr is okay with it..If not, I will not use it anymore...But boy it does make my back feel so much better!!
