If you dont have a playroom or useable basement

Where does your LO play...where do you keep all the toys?  I am trying to move more of DS's toys to his bedroom but its not that big and he normally plays in the living room (we do keep some toys in the living room) but it seems like he doesnt understand having toys in his room....I don't want to keep everything in the living room, there is just too much.  He ends up getting into everything else in the living room (dvd's, entertainment center etc)...I just really want to get organized!!

Re: If you dont have a playroom or useable basement

  • We have a large storage ottoman in our living room that holds a lot of toys and books, and we have a few bins and baskets on the floor that hold some more toys.

  • We're in the same boat. We currently live in a two-bedroom townhouse, and there's not much space. We have a small hallway upstairs between our rooms with a little "loft" area, and I'm moving our hope chest out of there to make more play room for DS. I'm going to get some storage cubes up there. This way he can play in his room and out into the hall. Good luck!

  • I have a storage ottoman for diapers/wipes and an antique wooden toybox for his toys.. it looks like a bench.  We also have a basket for books.
  • DD's room is pretty small (as is our house, 997 sq ft with just two bedrooms) but we just got this for her:

It's from ikea and you can get it in all different sizes.?

  • Our dining room doubles as a playroom.  Pretty much everyone I know does the same.  Our neighborhood is made up of old houses with big dining rooms.

We're getting  for Jude's room that when we move!  So practical and kid-friendly!

  • We got some of those large buckets with the rope handles from Target and have loaded those up with toys. We switch them out every once in a while and have "new" toys for him to play with. Then when company comes over, we can put the buckets out of sight and toys aren't cluttering up our whole house! HTH.

DD looooves it, she can see and reach all her toys instead of them being in a bucket and it keeps them out of the living room which is aweseome. If you do stack them though be sure to screw them together because the can be quite slippery. ?

We use this too for DS's toys in our living room. It doubles as our TV stand.

  • I should add that we use the Ikea cubes for toy storage in the dining room.
  • All over the ground floor!
  • Our family room for now. It works.

  • From looking at previous posters I am going to assume that I have a hell of a lot more toys. We have designated half of our living room space as a play area for DS. He has a train table that has storage bins underneath so we use one bin for puzzles, one for balls, one for trucks and cars, etc. Then we have two short shelving units against the wall that store his larger toys, trucks, books, etc. He also has a play kitchen and a basketball hoop in the other two corners of his play space.

My biggest suggestion would be to try to use bins for smaller toys that are organized by category and try to get as many toys off the floor as possible. As long as DS's toys have a "space" for them to go the room looks organized and not over run. It also makes it easier for him to find them and for us to put away.

  • We do have a basement but we mainly just keep toys down there for storage, no playing (yet). In the meantime, we keep one canvas bin in the living room with the most commonly used toys and another in her bedroom with less used toys. She tends to transfer them to the living room by the end of a week but that's ok, I just shuttle them back, switch them out, whatever as I go along.

In addition to the bin in the LR, I do have her table and chairs out here (great for playdoh, coloring, snacks, playing with her Little People doll house, block stacking.....things that kinda suck doing on our haaaaaaardwood floors lol) and a Playskool gardening bench. I have a little bin of books hidden near an end table so you can't even tell it's in here, and her Radio Flyer pony does stay in the center of the LR most times because she likes to bounce/rock on it all day long.

Sounds like a lot but honestly it works well and seems appropriate seeing as though the LR is her main play area.

  • We have a wicker basket for toys and one ride-on toy in our living room.  Everything else is in his room, either in another wicker basket or lumped in the wagon he got for Xmas.  I pick up his room while H gives him his bath, and we do the living room after he goes to bed.  It takes 10mins max.  Our entertainment center has glass doors on it and all the DVDs and Xbox games are in the cabinets so he can't get to them.

  • All over my house.  I've been so tired lately I dont even try to keep them in one place anymore.  Once LO's bedroom is done being painted (hopefully today), I will be seperating the baby toys from Ds's big boy toys.  His toys will be in that cupe thing with the container.  If he want to play with  them he can bring a container out of his room and play with them.  When he's done, he puts them back.  Hopefully this will work out.
  • Joseph's PNP is in his room, filled with toys. His Little Tikes table and chairs are in the living room, with his new toys from his birthday and Christmas on it. We also have a storage ottoman and storage bins built in behind our sectional.
  • Our living room is our toy storage and play room.  Not ideal, but there is no other place for it.
  • I found a bin rack at TRU on sale last year and have portioned off a corner of our living room for the toys to be. The larger toys like the rocking horse stay on the floor in front of the bins. And the whole thing is hidden by a couch. During the day, they are all over the floor. But we put them away at night so the house looks nice again.

  • We don't really have a ton of toys yet but what we do have is split between his room and the den.  I've got baskets or boxes for it all so theoretically it can be out of the way - we are bad about just leaving them out though.
