Trying to Get Pregnant

short luteal phase after nuvaring (cross-posted from BOTB)

Hi ladies,

I've been lurking for a while but this is my first post.  DH and I are not TTC yet but I went off NuvaRing and started charting about 3 months ago to let my cycle normalize and figure out what my cycle is like before we're reading to start TTC.   (DH and I are using barriers until we're actually ready to start TTC in a few months.)  Anyways, I know that it is common for cycles to be irregular for a few months after coming off hormonal contraceptives, but I was wondering if anyone on here has experienced having a short luteal phase after NuvaRing in particular or hormonal contraceptives in general, and whether it gradually got longer or whether it stayed short for a long time.  My first post-BC cycle I don't think I ovulated, but this past cycle I am pretty sure I ovulated right on day 14 (based on CM and temp rise) but my luteal phase was only 8 days.

I'm not worried or anything like that - I know that it is normal to have wonky cycles for a while after BC - but I was just curious to know if others have had a similar experience.

Also - I have one other bump boards etiquette question.  Is it okay to post the same question on more than one board?  Or is that a no-no.  If it is not ok I apologize in advance and I won't do it again. :)

Thanks in advance and have a happy new year!

Re: short luteal phase after nuvaring (cross-posted from BOTB)

  • B6 helped lengthen my luteal phase when conceiving DS.  It increased by 3 day in one month.

  • Like some PP's, I've used B6.  I'm not convinced it really worked for me, but hey, it certainly didn't hurt.  I would give yourself a year to regulate, and if after a year, you're noticing your LP is still short, check with your doctor.  Also, you can post on multiple boards, most people just preface the subject line with "XP" meaning "cross post", indicating it has been posted on another board.  Just try to post the questions on the boards most pertinent and be cautious of what the people on the board might be experiencing.
  • I also have issues with a short LP After coming off the nuvaring, which was in june. B6 has not made a difference for me and I have an appointment to see my doc in four weeks to discuss this. At my annual in october she mentioned it could be a progesterone issue. Guess it could be many things. I'd definitely wait a while for your body to adjust to no hormones before jumping to any conclusions.

  • I was on the pill and my first cycle off I did not ovulate.  For my second cycle my LP was 9 days.  After that I started taking 100 mg of B6 and my LPs ranged from 11-14 days.  There was 1 cycle in September that I only took B6 from ovulation on and my LP was 9 days.  I think B6 helped me a lot, but my LP lengths may have also been related to just getting off the pill.  Best of luck!
  • I was on nuvaring for a while. My LP was 8 days. Then my cycle started to go downhill from there. I have been having super long cycles. My last cycle ended to be 110 days. This cycle is at 40something....Maybe it is just me. But like everyone said vitamin B works.

  • That's interesting.  I was on NuvaRing before we ttc'd for DS and I always had 10-day luteal phases.  I thought it was just my body.  Do you think there is a connection?

I don't know if there is a connection or not, but I think it's possible since the hormones in NuvaRing and all other forms of hormonal contraception are specifically designed to mess up your cycle.  Now that I've been off of NuvaRing for two cycles I never want to go back on BCP/nuvaring/ortho evra again.  Now that I've read TCOYF, I like being able to actually understand what's going on with my body and not pumping myself full of chemicals. After being on ortho-tricyclen and then nuvaring for over 10 years, it makes sense that my body would take a while to get back to normal!

  • This is very interesting..I too was on Nuvaring and stopped in June of this year. My LP was very short, max 8 days and it has gradually increased, the past 2 months it was 11 days and this month it was 12 days. I think it may just take 6 + months for your body to adjust to being off Nuvaring due to the hormones the ring used. GL!
