2nd Trimester

Negative CVS-Soft Markers found on u/s??

I posted before about this but worded it all wrong (I was upset) but now that I am in fix it mode I want to repost-

We had a negative CVS (as in all is good with our baby) at 11 weeks-

We had an u/s done two days ago at 18 weeks and they told us our baby boy had shorter femur and humerus (measuring 16.5 weeks) and a VERY small penis...now our CVS said he was fine--

We were told he could have some kind of issue or he could be fine-

we could wait and see or terminate him :( (please let us not start a pro-choice/pro-life debate with this one-its painful enough-express your opinion of course-I am just saying these were my options they gave me)

So what does all this mean?  I was given some options (amnio, repeat u/s, do nothing)-but they all just do not make any sense to me and I am coming to see if you ladies have any insight into why this is? Or...?

We are thinking second opinion.....

  • I think 2nd opinions are always a good thing.  The more information you have, the better choices you can make.  I hope everything turns out just fine.

  • I would do a repeat ultrasound in a few weeks (once your LO has developed more). Best of luck. Sounds like a horrifying experience.
  • Just curious, but what does a small penis, short femur and short humerus actually indicate? I'm not sure why you'd terminate b/c of those reasons....Did they say he could just be behind developmentally? Was everything else ok, i.e. brain, heart, etc? Well, whatever your decision good luck. I'm sorry to hear that you've been put in this position and that your baby isn't doing well.

Also as PP said I'd for sure get a second opinion before I did anything drastic.

  • I'm so sorry. The negative CVS is a good sign. What does your ob say? In your position, I'd probably do the amnio IF the amnio would provide answers (I know amnio only provides certain answers, of which I don't entirely understand). We had to decide for or against amnio and had numerous doctors tell us all the same thing-- it matters in the sense of what will you do with the info? If you're planning on keeping the baby no matter what happens, then amnio is probably not worth anything to you. If you want to be able to have as much information as possible in order to make your decision, then maybe amnio is worth doing.

I'd talk to your regular ob, possibly get a second opinion, and ask if a f/u ultrasound is possible. Keep us posted, I really hope it turns out ok.
