My dogs always curl up on whatever soft thing is on the ground. We just had a really nice, plush carpet put in the living room, and if there's a shirt (DH) or blanket or something on top of the carpet, the dogs will insist on laying on that. Or the grill cover outside. That thing is scratchy nylon - not even soft. They are idiots.
Our cats prefer freshly laundered clothes or youngest DD's stuffed animals (large bear and rabbit). Our oldest cat (17 human years) is also attached to sleeping on a blanket DH got me for Christmas...but she prefers a warm human lap to be under it!

"And can it be that in a world so full and busy, the loss of one weak creature makes a void in any heart, so wide and deep that nothing but the width and depth of vast eternity can fill it up." - Charles Dickens
Lol. My cats insist on plopping down on my nice, clean and folded clothes. Even if I'm still folding. I move them off to add a shirt to the stack, the cat comes right back. Silly cats.
