50% effaced?

ok so I went for my 32 week checkup today and my OB said I was about 50% effaced - I asked him what that meant he showed me something with his hands - which looked to me like shortening, but I think after reading up on google, it was more meant as thinning?  I love my OB and he is usually crystally clear and I should have asked more, but he said he wasn't concerned becuase my cervix was very tightly closed and hard so I didn't harp.  He is not an alarmist, which is why i love him to death, but of course I am concerned.  Anyone go through this - is this one of those things you can walk around with for a while.  I should add I am already on modified bedrest - he has not put me on full at this point, but I am switched to weekly appts with him.  my next peri apt is next week for a u/s so maybe then I will get a better measurement than his internal.  thoughts - I will take any adivce or thoughts.

Re: 50% effaced?

  • I started shortening/thinning around 28w.  At 32w I was 50%, 2cm dilated, and -2 station.  I was put on modified BR until 36w.  At 36w I could resume normal activity (which was quite a bit of activity with a toddler) and I still made it to my 38w c/s.  GL.

  • You could call it shortening or thinning. Picture a nice fluffy krispy kreme yeast donut. That is your cervix with no effacement. Now smash the whole thing completely flat as a piece of paper with your first. That would be 100% effaced. ;)

I'm on bedrest for contractions and being fingertip dilated, but I'm not effaced at all...so I'm not sure if that should bump up your bedrest or not. I would be inclined to bump it up of my own volition, just because I'm paranoid. I wonder if you could call your peri to see if they could move up your u/s?

  • I went to L&D on Dec. 20 with cramping. My OB's partner did an internal and said my cervix was closed but that I was 50% thinned (effaced). I was 33 weeks. I have seen the OB and MFM since then and no one is concerned. I must have a c-section and ideally will not even go into labor before its scheduled or risk my uterus rupturing. Even with this risk, my OB and peri have comfortably scheduled the c-section for Jan. 13. I have not had any restrictions placed on my activity. HTH!
  • at the point you are, it is probably no big deal to be 50%. from what was explained to me, after a while, it just starts to wear down from all the weight and pressure that is on that area. i wouldn't be alarmed. good luck keeping them in & congratulations!!!
