2nd Trimester

Deciding on a hospital...

We have 2 hospitals to pick from in our area and my doctor will deliver at either. We toured one today that feels very much like a hospital with lots of services however it has a level 2 NICU. We will be touring the other hospital next week however I have been there before and it has a much warmer and homely, relaxing atmosphere...but does not have a NICU. If something went wrong with the baby, they would fly it approximately 70 miles away.

So...what would you choose? The atmosphere is very important to me but a NICU right on sight is extremely important too...

Re: Deciding on a hospital...

  • Honestly?! I would really prefer remembering the hospital being able to save my baby than the comforting feel it has. You never know what can happen, but I wouldn't gamble my babies life for me "feel good" emotions during labor. However, every person is different. If you can't relax in an environment like that then it may not be worth it! It's personal preference, but I would love to have a level 2 NICU at my hospital, just in case :)

  • I feel very strongly this way as well of course. I think we are pretty well set. I was just looking over both websites and the 2nd hospital has a level 2 nursery...what is the difference between a NICU and a level 2 nursery?
  • I am not sure. I wish mine had those. In Ca we are limited to only certain areas having NICU's, even though there are a lot hospitals all over. You are lucky. I would call the hospital with a level 2 nursery just to compare. Good luck! :)
