2nd Trimester

Multiple Practitioners?

My OB practices with two more doctors and she informed me that  they share different timings for delivery. I like my OB and obviously want her to deliver my baby, but she performs deliveries during day time only. The other two doctors are on rotation after hours.

Do you have multiple doctors who may deliver your baby, and did you meet each one of them to get to know them better?

Re: Multiple Practitioners?

  • There are 7 docs in the practice I go to.  I have not met any others, but evenings and weekends they rotate, so my induction could be with another doc.  I am fine with that.  Really, they just catch the baby and consult with the nurses.

  • My OB's office has 7 doctor's that deliver and they rotate coverage on nights and weekends. My appointments rotate with each doctor so I'll meet each doctor atleast once before the baby comes.
  • My clinic has like 11 doctors.  I'm trying to see a different one at each appt so that I'm at least familiar with them.  From all the info that I have gotten from there, they all sound like they have similar philosophies about all the aspects of pregnancy / birth and I feel really comfortable.  Everyone I have met so far has been great.  I'm not really too worried about it.
  • there are two MDs at the practice I go to.  I will see each of them around the same number of appts.  I'm going to attempt a med-free birth, so I wanted a good relationship with both doctors and not have to explain myself in the delivery room.
  • The dr office I go two has two doctors there. My doctor is female and thats what I wanted but I doubt at the time of delivery it will matter since I heard the doc is only there to catch the baby anyway ;) But I will see her the whole pregnancy though she did inform me that another doctor may deliver the baby (she did not mention how many aside from her though) That for some reason never bothered me as long as I see her the whole rest of the time I guess.
  • My practice has 8 doctors. We have the option of rotating amongst all of them (which I do) as there is a different doctor on call each day. There is no way of knowing who will deliver.
  • My practice has 10 doctors and I've met with 4.  There is one I absolutely love that I have done most of my appointments with.  The others are okay and I wouldn't mind them in the delivery room but there is one that a is a real b**** and I will have to have a plan B if she is on call Stick out tongue

  • There are 5 doctors plus a midwife at the practice I go to. They say that anyone of them could deliever the baby so they would like for the patients to meet all of them. I think that I have two more doctors to meet.

  • My practice has 6 Drs.  They rotate days on call, so that they don't have to interupt their regular appointments if one of their patients is in labor.  On my first appt the scheduler suggested I see other Dr's and at my last appt with my regular Dr, I ask how important it was.  Her response was that it totally up to me if I wanted to see the other Drs but not required.  I've just choosen to continue to see my regular Dr.  The practice is only women, so I know I won't have a male Dr at the time of delivery, but based on what I've been told and read the Dr is really there to catch so you don't deal with them a lot and that you see the nurses on call more.  When I reach L&D, I'm not really going to care who's there catching, I'll just be wanting LO OUT ASAP!

ditto. We rotate through all of them. So far I've met 4/6. I will have more than 2 more appts so I'll probably see some more than once and then we'll have one of them deliver the baby. So far, I like all of them. Very nice/personable. But of course you have a favorite.

for those who say that the dr is just there to catch the baby . its true, but what happens if something doesn't go the way you expect it?  I can tell you that for my delivery for DD #1 .  i needed a lot more then the Dr. just catching the baby.

  • When I delivered DD and DS, I saw a doctor who had a solo practice so she delivered both my kids.  She did have a doctor who was on-call sometimes but she delivered 95% of the babies herself.

We moved to Seattle and now I see doctors as part of a larger practice - 8 I think.  I didn't think I would like it but so far, it has been fine.  I have met most of the doctors through appointments (the main doctor that I loved is on maternity leave herself) and have liked them all except one.

  • Thanks a lot for all your responses . This is very useful information.

I am glad to hear from all of you. I will my other practitioners as well.

  • There are 5 doctors that deliver at my practice.  They make sure that you have at least one appointment with each doctor throughout the pregnancy.  Then after you've met them all you pick your "primary" doctor who will deliver your baby.  If something happens to your primary doctor or she isn't available then one of the other doctors on a rotating on-call schedule will come to the hospital.  I like that no matter what I will at least be familiar with the person delivering the baby even if there is some sort of emergency and my primary OB is not available.
