We will be using luvs because they are cheaper than the name brand, and the only ones we could use with DD because she was allergic to everything else. I have a friend who uses cloth, it is more eco friendly, but she spends what she saves in laundry detergent, and a laundry service.
I really wanted to use cloth diapers simply because in the long run it would be cheaper, BUT we are using disposable because it's easier, boyfriend also wanted to use disposable, and when I go back to work and the baby goes to the babysitter I don't know when I'll find the time to be able to wash the disposables, let alone what we wear everyday. So in the long run, even though I'm only 18w1d pregnant we have been buying diapers every paycheck so we know we'll have enough when LO gets here....if not more, but better to be safe then sorry.
The disposable/cloth debate is a tough one. I've heard that cloth really aren't much better for the environment because of all the water and energy you use laundering them. If the cloth diapers were significantly better for the environment and cheaper than disposable, I'd consider them, but from what I've read, they aren't. Just what I've heard, but I may be wrong.
1) Environmental reasons. Although you use electricity/water in washing them, I consider that by far the lesser evil to filling up a landfill.
2) Cost. We spent about $300 on diapers total on DD, with nothing to spend at all for DC #2, and we did not at all go the most economic route you can go. Before we moved, we also had to pay for trash pickup based on can size, and did not want to have to pay to supersize. I also hated feeling like I was throwing money away if I went to change DD and she was dry, with the cloth, I don't care.
3) Gross factor. I like that the things only sit around dirty for a day or two, not a week waiting for the trash man. It's weird, I know. I also get creeped out thinking about those ultra-absorbant chemicals in disposable diapers, I kind of wonder about what's in there. When I was a baby my parents had to switch to cloth because I developed a nasty reaction to it...I don't know if it's what they still use, but I figured we use cloth, we don't have to worry.
Cloth/disposable hybrid seems to be the best choice for us
G diapers are what we are planning on using. They offer both a cloth insert and a disposable insert
- While at home we will use cloth inserts. They are better for the environment and I prefer cloth on my baby's skin over the high absorbency chemicals in traditional disposables
-We'll use the flushable liner option when out and about or for traveling. The liner can be flushed down the toilet, thrown away or composted (pee only).
- The little g pants are super cute!! I'm putting a bunch on my registry to get started and have found some pretty good deals on Ebay as well
That's the plan anyways!

The studies that show that cloth is not better for the environment were sponsored and administered by companies that sell disposable diapers. More recent independent studies overwhelmingly show that cloth is better for the environment.
We'll be doing cloth mostly with disposables or *hopefully* hybrid for travelling. If the hybrids don't work, we'll use disposables when travelling/out of the house.
Cloth-- I think they're cute, I don't mind doing laundry, I think they're going to be less expensive in the long run (especially since we're planning on more than one), I really have guilt about disposals filling up the landfill and would like to make the earth as happy as possible for my baby, cloth reduces the chances of diaper rash....

We will be using cloth for a variety of reasons: mainly cost, the environmental impact, as well as the health benefits for LO.
