Vent - such anxiety over getting tests done

I have ITP (means, unknown cause for low blood platelets) so I see a hemotologist and OB. My platelets stay under 120,000 and thats normal for me. No biggy.

Well my white blood cell count came back slightly elevated (12.6) last OB appt, and she sent me to my hemo just to make sure all is well. I have a tooth that needs a root canal, so that may be why my WBC spiked.

Now I have an appt tomorrow, and I am so nervous, just the anxiety over tests bothers me and I hate waiting on results/doctor call backs. I sometimes feel like I just wish they'd leave me alone to spare me LOL But I know it's all apart of the deal......Just wanted to vent!

  • I know how you feel.  I was diagnosed with ITP in September and all the wondering and test will drive you nuts.  I went yesterday to have my platelets checks and they are down to 9,000 so back on steroids.  Super Angry

  • Yikes! Mine stay around 69-120,000 so its not too bad, I just hate the anxiety knowing something is "off" you know?

My hemo called again and said they will be seeing me in a check up before the labs are drawn so that they can decide what bloodwork to do....That in itself makes me nervous, since now I am thinking "great, what if its worse than just needing WBC labs"

I am a negative nancy. LOL

I know pregnancy usually isn't 100% perfect and most all women have SOME sort of issue, and I should be glad my docs are ontop of things.... but it makes me so nervous.

(edit: and Im sorry you have to go on steroids! Thats a fear of mine too but I hear it is safe..)

  • I know exactky what you mean.  My platelets have really been up and down since my BFP so I have been in weekly for blood tests and I am so nervous the day or two before I go I can hardly function.

  • Me too. Hubby reminds me, I should only be nervous if my docs WERENT doing something proactive. Better to stay ontop of it, than let it slide, ya know? I get that, I just still hate the anxiety!! I just want normal, routine bloodwork without worrying what my numbers are :| GRRR. I know I am probably being a whiney baby, and that there are women during preg who go thru ALOT worse to stay healthy......

I AM grateful for my docs, I just wish I could forget them sometimes, and not have a Hemotologist, and OB putting things in my head...LOL The slightest number changes make me panic, like this recent white blood cell count...... when really, WBC is not super huge big deal..

Do you have a hemo you see that works along side your OB? Since I have ITP I also have to go 2 hours away for my big ultrasound in January with a specialist recommended by my OB......makes me feel like I am abnormal since I can't just run up to a normal doc for things. :P

I totally understand.  I have to see a hematologist as well b/c I have genetic hemochromatosis (iron overload).  I'm terrified of the needles but because of pregnancy I can't take my normal anti-anxiety meds so I get MAJORLY stressed and then waiting for my lab results is so worrisome too.  And on top of that it's genetic so since I've been having a lot of trouble keeping my iron levels down since becoming pregnant (the opposite of what should be happening!) they think Baby Peach probably has it too.  I'm having to have phlebotomies too (blood lettings - 2 pints every 2 weeks). As if pregnancy didn't fatigue me enough, getting drained of a quart of blood a month doesn't exactly help.

Poor you! Thankfully I have no fear of needles. I am just going nuts over having to get "stuff" done thats not "routine".

I feel for you!! Im thinking its quite normal for women to have SOME issues during preg....The more you test for,  the more you'll find, usually minor stuff that probably effects more people than they realize only bc they haven't tested! That's just what I think. I never knew I had ITP until I actually had a platelet count done at 22, doc said its possible I've had it my whole life, and either a) tests never showed it or b) i was never tested in the first place.

    :)

  • Since you girls all have hemo's, are your hemos in an oncology office? THAT scared the you know what out of me the first few times!!!! It's nerve racking knowing hemo's usually are in oncology/cancer offices. : Totally silly, I know..

I've moved around my whole life so I've had a lot of hemotologists.  They have ALL been mainly onocologists.  Actually it helps my fears a lot.  if I can sit next to someone with cancer who is getting chemo while I'm being a big baby about having a little bit of blood siphoned off I don't have a "breakdown".  I can say to myself "This person is in a LOT of pain and could die and is really upbeat.  You just have to get a little needle stick.  Calm down and don't be a baby"
