2nd Trimester

Cold sores?

I have had maybe 3 cold sores my entire life, but I'm getting one on my lip. It's sore and blister-y looking.

Is this common in pregnancy? I tried to look up some information but really couldn't find anything about this being a common thing when you are pregnant. I don't remember getting any with my son.

Re: Cold sores?

  • Yeah sometimes things tend to come out more during pregnancy.  I'm currently having a horrible yi.  It's really annoying and bad.  Hopefully, this will be my last :(.  My dr. told me that weird things happen due to hormones.

  • I get them yearly.

When I got one this year while pregnant, I called the pharmacist and asked if Lysine was okay to take.  He told me yes without saying yes.  He said that he wouldn't take it every day, but just once for a cold sore shoudl be fine.

Of course check with your doctor.

Also, get some Abreva and keep on it until it heals.

ETA: I took 1000 mg (two tablets) and the fever blister went away the next day.

  • If you've had a cold sore before, you can always get one again. I get em, and the best treatment I've found is slathering it in Carmex. But I've also heard Abreva is good if you can afford it.

  • I have one now and I have just been putting abreva (even though it REALLY doesn't do anything) and dabbing rubbing alcohol on it to dry it up extra fast since I can't take the antibiotic I usually get. So sorry, cold sore are the worst.

  • I am very prone to cold sores and my PCP gives me an ongoing Rx for Zovirax which is the best cream out there for cold sores. Its really expensive but so worth it. I asked if I could take it while pg and my NP said it was fine b/c its oral. Maybe your PCP or OB can give you a Rx for it. GL! Trust me I know how bad they are!

  • I didn't get them at all with my first pregnancy but with this pregnancy I've already had three nasty cold sores/blisters. :(  I usually put abreva on it to help with the pain even though it really doesn't help for very long it's something.

You took 1000 mg of what?? I get them yearly, too, and I'd love to know how to get them to go away the next day!

I have used Abreva and I don't know that it does anything, but my sister swears by it. Try it, it could work for you.

Sorry you have to deal with that, they're awful!
