Prep for big US?

I have mine this afternoon and they didn't give me special instructions (e.g. coming in with a full bladder), but on previous u/s they did tell me to have a full bladder. Any idea on how much water you're supposed to generally drink prior to the u/s? Also, if there's something else I should do in preparation? TIA

Re: Prep for big US?

  • they told me 1 bottle of water within an hour before is enough.

  • As long as you dont empty your bladder within the hour that you go you should be fine.  No point in making yourself uber uncomfortable

  • I didn't need to have a full bladder for mine but they also didn't want a completely empty bladder,  The ultrasounds are so good now it doesn't require a full bladder anymore.

  • MIne gave me a sheet for my BIG U/S. It says drink 16 oz 30 to 40 min before. I am also going to drink a little Mt. Dew or Dr. Pepper to make sure baby is awake...Good Luck...can't wait to see your post this afternoon when you return

  • I asked and they said there was no need to come with a ful bladder. I came in on 12 ounces of OJ and 12 ounces of water and everything was just fine. If they didn't specifically instruct you to come in with a full bladder I wouldn't worry about it. I was way more comfortable not having one!
  • My big ultrasound is Thursday and I have to drink 32 oz of water beginning one hour before my appointment within 15 minutes. I seriously don't know how I'm not going to explode. As it is, I pee about once every half hour just drinking normally. I think the further along you are the less necessary it is to have a full bladder, but I believe that changes after 20 weeks or so. I would think at 18 weeks you would still need a full bladder. Maybe you could call your doctor and ask?

  • My instruction sheet says to have a full bladder but when I called to make the appt., they said that's not necessary.

Several friends have told me to have a little OJ so the baby is moving and you're more likely to be able to see the goods. :)

Also, don't forget your VHS or DVD so they can record (if that's an option at your center).

A DVD? what would they record, just everything that the tech looks at during the u/s? I've never heard of this but it sounds interesting. Maybe I'll bring one just in case they do do it.

  • Mine didn't tell me to come in with a full bladder and they actully had me empty it before the u/s.

  • Also, don't overdo it on the sugar. If you do they won't be able to get the measurements they need because your LO could be too squirmy.
  • They told me that once you hit 17w, there is no need to drink any water at all before an u/s.  I didn't drink any before mine and they were able to see everything!

  • Alittle OJ if baby is sleeping and a CD.

My doc puts the pics on CD for us.

I also don't need a full bladder, she usually asks if I want to empty it....plus I have to do the normal pee in a cup at the beginning of the appt anyway.
