2nd Trimester

anyone plan on using cloth diapers?

I would really like to for a number of reasons, but can't find any diaper services in my area (central/north jersey).  Just curious if anyone else plans to use a diaper service and if you happen to know of any good ones in my area.  TIA!

  • I thought about it a while ago, but we don't have a diaper service in the area. The ladies on the Eco Friendly Family board are tons of help on this subject though!

  • Thanks, I hadn't even realized there was an eco-friendly board, I will check it out!

  • We use CDs, but we do our own laundry (no service).

  • We use CDs and wash ourselves.  It's one extra load every two days, and it's pretty easy to squeeze in.

  • Why would you use cloth diapers and a serivce? Doesn't that defeat the main purpose of using them? Services use terrible chemicals in order to clean. Washing them isn't going to add to much to your daily life. Otherwise you may want to look at recycled or more degradable disposals.

That's a misnomer, actually.  There are diapers marketed as more biodegradable, but the conditions in a landfill actually don't allow it to happen.

  • I'm still in the process of researching the whole idea of using cloth diapers.  If, in fact, the process and chemicals they use to clean them does make it counterproductive then obviously it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to do it.  Also, while we are environmentally conscious, our interest in using cloth diapers is not only based upon the environmental impact.

  • I run a cloth diaper service in Long Island and WE DO NOT USE harsh chemicals to clean the diapers that we rent out. Diaper Services save more water and electricity then home laundering. Many of my clients do not have access to washing their own diapers or just don't want to deal with dirty diapers so they use my service. It is fine if you choose to wash your own diapers because you also have the freedom to use whatever kind of diapers you like, but if you did use a service please know that they are  NOT BAD! Many people are just misinformed about the benefits of diaper services. The only disposable diaper i could recommend is Tushies but no disposable diaper is biodegradable contrary to popular belief.  Give cloth a try though whether its by a service or at home. They really are so much better for baby. Good luck mama!
