2nd Trimester

sick - maybe TMI

So Christmas eve night I started having diarrhea.  I've had it since then about 4 + times a day.  I figured it was just a bug and it would go away on it's own but here I am almost a week later and still having it.  I was worried so I called my OBGYN and spoke to the nurse (she was a snot on the phone) who told me that it's a virus and there is nothing I can do about it and that it won't hurt the baby.  I can apparently take Immodium and I have to just let it run it's course.  If it's not gone in 10 days to call.

This seems crazy to me.  I feel like it's just wrong - like there is something wrong.  What would you ladies do?  Call and request to speak with the doctor?

  • I'm not really sure. I am leaning towards agreeing with the nurse, that you just have to let it run it's course. Unless there are other things going on... any fever??

  • I'd definitely call my doc, 10 days with diarrhea seems like too much for me.

  • I was hospitalized with a similar virus last week, except I also had severe vomiting (vomited 50 times in 2 hours - yuck!) and my zofran wasn't working.

It does sound like your nurse is right, however. If it's a virus, they can't do anything. I was directed to take immodium for the diarrhea too. Just keep yourself hydrated because that's the key. If you feel dehydrated and have low blood pressure or a high pulse, then you will probably need IV fluids.

  • you have to be worried about dehydration, and your doc should be concerned if you have had it for more than a day or two. make sure you are drinking enough. Go with your gut, either make an appt soon,. Dont call the nurse, call the front desk and tell them you want to be seen.I have spoken to several nurses, and I hate some of them. Just tell the receptionist u need to be seen. imodium is safe, but like I said dehydration is what you have to worry about and if you are concerned go in.
