Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Please help, Question

Ava is a FF baby and as been from day one. She is on just regular formula. My mother told me that all regular milk formula is regulated by the FDA and that it's essentially the same. We got Enfamil cans in the mail and she was on that last week ( she usually was on Similac). Well, we got some Good Start free as well, and we tried that yesterday. She is also on Gerber grains and Yogurt cereal that we've been putting in her bottles for a few weeks now. She pooped twice yesterday, big poops that were a little runny and when she woke up today she had done another huge poop. Now she isn't wanting to eat her first morning bottle. She's acting happy, and she is also teething. Her first teeth came in last week. I am concerned about the pooping so much and her not wanting to eat. I am going to try and feed her again in a few. My Pedi has walk in hours. Should I take her? I don't want her to get dehydrated. Also, was my mom correct in telling me that the formula's are the same? Please tell me what you would do. Thanks so much.

Re: Please help, Question

  • The formulas are FDA regulated. We use the parent's choice (wal mart) brand, and it has the nutritional compairison (compaires Similac and Infamil, I think) right on the side of the can. Do you have the baby bargain books? It has good information also.

  • No, I don't have them but I will look into it. We just keep getting free coupons and thats why we used the different brands. Do you think I should take her to the doc?
  • She might not like the tasts of the most recent formula.  Do you have the formula handy that you used most often.  Try a bottle of that and see if she'll take it.  If not, call doc and see what they see before going in.

  • hannah doesn't want her bottle right away in the mornings either.  She wants to look around, sip on it some, look around some more have another drink, talk, etc.  It's probably just a phase.

Also, I started  feeding her baby food and she's been having 2-3 poopy diapers a day instead of her normal one.  The runs could be from teething for your baby.  I wouldn't switch formulas so often, but that's me.  I don't see a reason to take your baby to the doctor either.

  • They're not exactly the same. GoodStart has broken down proteins (gentler)and regular Similac and Enfamil have whole proteins. I wouldn't switch around like that, it isn't good for their tummies. You could try Target (Up&Up) formula. It's cheaper and I've heard good things.
  • No, formulas are not all the same.  Not only are there differences between some brands but there are big differences with the specialty ones too (sensitive, soy, etc).  I would call the nurse to ask what she thinks about your LO's situation.

If you compare the main ingredients list, you'll see that some of them have the major ingredient of nonfat milk, where others have corn syrup and sugar in place of milk...

I really like this link for more info on FF:
