Infertility

Question about FSA

Does anyone know if you can use money from medical flexible spending accounts for fertility treatments if you pay OOP? I'm enrolling in new benefits and had never really thought about this before but it might be a good option to put some money into an FSA pretax if I can use it for that.

Thanks for any input!

Re: Question about FSA

  • I think you can.  My medical insurance is through DH & our FSA is through me.  We're lucky enough to live in a state where IF tx is 80% covered & I use my FSA debit card for all my co-pays.

  • Yes you can.

Last year DH and I maxed out our FSA and it was a life saver!  We were able to use it for everything from co-pays to Donor fees to acupuncture.  As long as it's a medical expense that is not covered by your insurance you can submit it for reimbursement.

    Good luck!

  • I believe you can.  I have a HealthComp 125 plan and we can use it for all our IF costs.  I think we can even use it for our donor sperm costs but I haven't checked into that yet.

  • You have to check your particular FSA's plan to see what they cover, in my case - our FSA covers IF treatments, specifically IVF, which we cannot get insurance coverage for until 2 years have passed. We don't want to wait that long, so we both maxed out our FSAs @ $5K each to cover part of our Shared Risk cycles. I believe most FSAs do cover IF treatment.
  • Actually, you should check the IRS website for eligible procedures.  That is what matters.  IF treatment is covered.

DH does not have access to FSA with his company, though on the bright side they pay his health insurance 100%.

I actually use a HSA (Health Savings Account).  I have a high deductible health insurance plan and my company gives $500 towards it.  On the positive side, it isn't a use it or lose it plan.  On the negative side, you can only use what you have funded.

. I believe most FSAs do cover IF treatment.

FSAs are federal, so it's not like there are plans that vary.

You can pay for non-covered medical expenses with an FSA.

This is a list from the IRS of what is covered.
