Pregnant after a Loss

Does sparkling water count?

I'm just wondering what you ladies think.  I'm not a big fan of water.  I never have been, and I can't really explain it.  The only way I can drink it is mixed with Crystal Light or the likes, and I'm trying to avoid the unnecessary sweeteners.  So, since I'm trying to up my intake of fluids, and I've found that a little bit of POM juice mixed with sparkling water is very easy for me to drink.  If I drink a ton of that each day, does this count as getting enough water?  Or do I have to stick to plain water.  I'll ask my ob next week as well, just curious what your thoughts were.  Also, I'm wondering what tips you have for drinking lots of water if you're not a big water drinker.  Thanks for any advice!

Re: Does sparkling water count?

  • I am unsure about the sparkling water... but I am a fellow nonwater fan.  I have found that if I add a lemon or two, it really helps.  It gives a little bit of flavor, but no sweeteners.  I will make a big pitcher of water with lemon, and it is so much easier to drink.  I also make it my goal to finish the pitcher by the end of the day.  I fill up my water bottle with it, and go run errands ect.... it really helped me keep up when I was pregnant with the twins.

  • I've been allocating water to appointments.  I know this doesn't make much sense, but since I'm a veterinarian, doing 20 minute appointments, I make it a point to take two or three big gulps of water between each appointment. That allows me to drink about 3 liters of water a day.  Before this, I would hardly drink water at all.  If there are tasks at work that you do during the day that you could kind of "time" drinking water to, that might help you.  I don't know about the POM juice/sparkling water question, though.  Good luck.

That's a good idea.  I'm a teacher, so it's always hard during the day to remember to drink besides at recess and lunch, which isn't really enough.  Right now it's not too hard because I'm on vacation, but maybe when school starts up, I'll just keep a bottle on my desk and take a couple big gulps between each lesson or something.

I added lemon to my water too. It makes it much easier to drink. I was never really a big water fan either but when I am really thirsty it does seem to be the only thing I can do to quench my thirst. I have to have a lot of ice in it though.

  • Yes it counts. Caffeinated don't really count because it's a diruetic. The added carbon dioxide is not. Now your carbon footprint on the other hand.... :-P
  • You don't have to drink only water to reach your recommended fluid intake.  In can be a combination of juice, milk, water, tea, gingerale etc... there is no way I would reach the quota if all I drank was water.  I can't stand water.  I drink like 70% in water and the other 30% in a combination of liquids.  I prefer ice cold water to just room temperature and sometimes I will make a pitcher of water w/lemon slices, cucumber slices or ginger.... it is way more refreshing and still healthy.

  • My OB said it can replace some water but not all. You want to be careful about Quinine which is found in a lot of sparkling. Try putting lemon in the water. Lime is actually pretty good too. I also was able to find an off brand of crystal light that is sweetened with sucralose (splenda) which is supposed to be safer than the aspartame. When I couldn't find it I used countrytime lemonade or cherry koolaid mix and just put half the amount in to give it a little extra flavor.

  • make sure it's sparkling with no additives, no sodium. and not club soda - that's full of sodium. also a lot of the flavored sparkling waters are full of sugar or the fake sugars - so just watch that.

I also like propel and life water - neither have aspartame and are calorie free.
