Babies: 9 - 12 Months

CIO-How long does it last?

We've been sleep training our DD for 8 days now.  She cries anywhere from 90 seconds to 30 minutes EVERY time we put her down for a nap or to sleep.  We've been following a version of the Ferber method, called the Sleep Easy Solution.  (We get her sleepy, but awake, lay her in her crib, say goodnight and leave.  We check on her from 3-10 minutes, more often in the beginning, and less often now that it's been over a week.  We don't touch her once she's in the crib.)

It's been going well, overall.  DD is falling asleep on her own, and staying asleep FAR longer than she ever has before when I nursed her to sleep.

But we still get crying--every time.  It's hard on us, of course, EVERY TIME.  And it's hard on her.  How much longer is this supposed to go on?

Re: CIO-How long does it last?

  • I don't know.  We're in the same boat. We've been doing  CIO for 6 nights now.  She still wakes once or twice a night now.  She's improving but not STTN yet.

    ETA: Tonight is night 5.

  • We are doing it now too so i'm not much help , but from what i hear after 4-6 nights it should be much easier...so maybe your LO is just taking a little longer. Good luck!

  • Everyone I've talked to said it takes 3-4 days and then the baby is not crying anymore and sleeps 12 hours. I think thats BS.  I tried it 3 times and my LO wont stop crying so I quit.  He is not sleeping 12 hours but is sleeping enough for me.  I think it works on some babies but my little guy wouldnt have it.

  • Honestly?  Some babies just need to cry to fall asleep.  DS has done this from birth no matter whether we were holding him (we don't own a rocker, so he was never rocked) or he was in his crib falling asleep on his own.  Although I think in general, the crying falls into a bit more of a pattern after a week or two when sleep training.
  • my son always whines to fall asleep.....not crying it's just a tired little whine w/ his eyes closed for a few minutes (he does this even if I do rock him, I am not just mean Mommy who constantly lets him whine!)
  • At 6 months, it did not work for us.  At 8 months it did.  That was with DS.  With DD, it worked after 4 or 5 days at 6 months.
  • Ds cries between 3 seconds and 3 minutes every time we lay him down.  He never goes down without a little cry-like saying "don't leave me!"  It got significantly better for us after 3-4 days.  We did a modified Ferber, but we don't do it for night wakings, just to lay him down.
