Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

BF vs FF question

There is one thing that I have never understood.

If it is ok to do extended breast feeding (and I am not saying it isn't!), why are people so insistant that children get weaned from a bottle at a year? I am sure the same sucking motion is just as soothing whether it be from a bottle, pacifier, or breast.

A friend of mine was criticized because her 18 month old was using a bottle. Her daughter was weaning from BF, and that was the route her mother chose to do it. So before she was criticized for BF too long, then for using a bottle. It is just strange to me.

  • I was wondering the same thing...

  • I agree.  DD BFed til 10 months and self weaned at that point so we just started formula in the bottle since she was used to the bottle since I pumped BM for her while working.

Now, bottles are her comfort item.  She doesn't take a paci, have a blankie or a lovey.  I'm not in a huge hurry to wean her from them.  Besides she takes her milk faster and more completely than from a sippy.  She doesn't have a problem drinking from the sippy either so I'm not too concerned.

  • yeah ds had his last bottle around 21 months....i wasnt really too worried about it.  i used the same rationale about recomended bf for 2 years so i figured i'd worry about it then...

  • It may have something to do with the child's bite by reading the abstract of this study

    That study is interesting.

BTW: If you are using safari (I am not sure about firefox, but I think it applies there as well), all you have to do is click on the icon at the beginning of the web address, then drag it into your post/reply. It should make it clicky for you.

  • Maybe it has to do with the consistency/material of the nipple?

I don't know because DD still uses a bottle and I don't give a rat's arse what anyone thinks or says.

  • I thought it had something to do with cavities.

How are you supposed to drag it onto another page?

  • That is a good question.  My LO was FF and we were advised to switch her to milk and off a bottle by one, so she can transistion over easier.  My sister BF her LO for a year and a half and he still uses a bottle (he is 2 now).

Maybe it has to do with more sugar in the formula.  We were told by our pedi not to use the formula that is made for over 1 year because there is so much sugar.

When I switched to milk I switched to sippies so it was all at once.

  • this is why i am in no hurry to get rid of E's one and only daily bottle. I have no issues, my pedi has no issues and I dont care that the general sheep philosophy says bottles gone at 12 months.

He weaned himself down to 1, that one can linger...
