LOs with eczema-any advice?

Took DS to the pedi this a.m. for what I thought was a rash covering his body.  Turns out it is eczema.  She gave us some handouts, but I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice on products, etc. that work well.  It's covering his entire trunk and a little on his arms.

  • Aquaphor.  It's greasy but it is AWESOME.

  • Mix a little OTC hydrocortisone cream with cetaphil and apply to his rashy areas. It will help the itching without overloading your kid with steroids. Other than that, use dye/fragrance free detergent, short baths that aren't hot, get rid of any J&J bath/lotion products, frequent lotioning. My friend's kid had a terrible time w eczema and had to be greased up 2x a day with vaseline. My kiddo's was so much easier to deal with. Once we got rid of it the first time, it's been pretty easy to control. When he starts to flare up, I get him out of the bath and slather him with cetaphil, then cover that with aquaphor and put him in his fleece sleeper. Good luck!
  • We tried Eucerin and hydrocortisone cream with no luck.  Calendula cream helps DS, and he has prescription triamcinolone for the bad spots.  It's still not completely gone though.
  • aloe vera!  dd's had a red, itchy rash on her cheeks for the past month that was finally diagnosed as eczema.  the pedi told us to use 1% hydrocortisone and vaseline = fail.  he prescribed a higher dose of hydrocortisone = fail.  2 days of using the "juice" of an aloe vera plant = success!!!

  • We use the creamy Aveeno baby wash, only bathe DD every other day, and then grease her up with Cetaphil cream while she's still a little damp. If we feel or see any patches that look bad, we do the Cetaphil twice a day on those. We used to use a hydrocortisone cream & Aquaphor over that when she was really bad, but the current regimen seems to be working really well and we haven't had any bad episodes lately.

  • We have a ton of rx stuff as Anna's case was really bad for awhile. She is having a bad flare-up now actually. But, we do use CeraVE daily and than the rx stuff and that seems to control it. I think we just had a major weather change that may have triggered it.
  • VANACREAM!  It's sold at Target and the like but is behind the counter at the pharmacy because it's that good!  (no RX needed).  It's super thick and everything free.  I have terrible eczema and it is the only thing that works for me.  Now DS seems to have my skin and it's completely made his disappear too!  No steroids, so you can use it twice a day.  Also, not hot baths, just warm, every other day.  Watch your soaps and stuff because that can make it flair up.  Hope that helps!

Oh, and a humidifer can make a huge difference!
