How would you pronounce this name?

Leila, for a girl. It's a family name, and I really like it, but I'm wondering if most people would pronounce it correctly. It's very similar to a couple of other popular names - Layla and Lila.

Re: How would you pronounce this name?

  • I'd pronounce it Lay-lah.

    Me too.

  • Is it German?  I would probably pronounce it like Lilah just because of the ei combination.
  • It's Persian. It's pronounced Lee-luh, but it seems like a lot of people would assume it's pronounced Lay-luh, which is a more common name in the US. Hmmm. I'm also contemplating the name Layla, because it's more common and less likely to cause confusion. I really like Leila though.
  • I knew a girl growing up named Leila and she pronounced it Lay-la (she's Persian). I would spell it Leela if you want that pronunciation, because I don't think most people will get it right.

  • I'd pronounce it lee-lah. I'm not sure how people get Lay-la even with an ei. Like in the word: conceive. It is pronounced Con- seev. Not con-SAVE. If this is what you like, I'd go for it. You make have to correct people on pronunciation, but most people will get it right away.

  • I have a friend named Leila and everyone pronounces it Lay luh.

  • When I lived in Egypt, the name was popularly pronounced "Lay-la".  But I knew a British girl with the name and the same spelling who pronounced her name "Lie-la".  I would never have gotten Lee-la.

People get LAY-LA because the world LEI is pronounced LAY (ever been to Hawaii?).

My dog is Leila.  It is pronounced LAY-LA.  And nobody has ever pronounced it Lee-La when they read her name.  So if you want Leela I would do it Leela.  Otherwise you will be correcting people A LOT.
