long term EPers, come in

How long did you EP and how did you decide when to quit?

I'm still pumping but down to 3x/day, which isn't so bad.  I was thinking of dropping to 2x/day maybe in Feb-ish in case my supply tanks and I give it up all together at that point.  I was thinking I wanted to get him through the bulk of winter/RSV season before I quit.

DS will be 1 year old on Dec 30th and he'll be 9 months ajdusted on 1/6/10.

But then I got to reading the post below about cow's milk.  Stupid question, but if I'm still pumping, then there would be no reason to start cow's milk until I stop pumping or run out of milk, right?  We have a *huge* freezer stash. (I'm only on August milk now!)

  • Wow girl!  Your just amazing.  I wish my supply lasted that long.  I lasted 6weeks before it just tanked :+(

If you stopped now do you think you have enought in the freezer to make it out of RSV season?

Yeah - we're only in August milk right now!  Our freezer, our 2nd standalone freezer, my parent's freezer, and my aunt's freezer all have milk in them. haha.

But I was thinking he'd need the "current" antibodies to fight off the new stuff going around :/

I personally dont think it would be bad to keep him on BM till after RSV season and then switch to milk.  Have to talked to his doc yet?

  • I would be in no hurry to switch him to cow's milk.  I would just wait until you are through with all of your BM before switching him over.  However, if I were you, I would give him fresh milk through the winter (esp. if the frozen milk is in deep freezers).  BM loses most of those awesome antibodies when it is frozen.

I am trying to figure out the pumping thing too (when to stop).  I have only been pumping for like 7 months but I am already down to like 4-5 pumps a day because I just can't find the time to pump any more than that (plus, stella needs so much more attention now that she likes to "play", etc.).  I just kind of go week by week with it.  I would love to make it through the winter but we will see.  My nips are in such bad shape, i am tired of my hideous nursing bras & tanks, I HATE being tethered to the pump all the time.  but, we do anything for our babies, don't we?

  • With my first son, I was pumping during the day, nursing at middle of night feedings, he weaned and STTN at 9 months.  I kept pumping till he was 14 months.  We discovered he has a deadly milk allergy at 12 months and transitioned him really gradually to soy.  He is 3 and still has that nasty allergy.

No reason to start cow's milk till you empty that stash...you know it lasts for 6-12 in a deep freezer.  I plan on nursing and/or pumping till at least 12 months adjusted, but then I also want to make sure we have enough to make it thru next RSV season...so however long it takes.

  • I made it 14.5 months, though the last 3 weeks were weaning, so I wasn't getting much.

My goal was to make it to a year adjusted and with my freezer stash, that's what we did. I was also going back to work and pumping at work was just a nightmare.

And no.. breastmilk is far superior to cow's milk. Cow's milk has little nutritional value, it's not "needed."

  • thanks ladies!  I'll keep doing what I do best ;)

I've been giving him at least 8 oz of fresh a day and freezing the rest.  That way we're working through the stash and also giving fresh antibodies. I suppose I could do all fresh but I'd rather work through some of the old stash at the same time! :)

  • Late comer here! I pumped until almost 14 months but it was June when I quit. So, you're doing great by even giving him 8oz during RSV season so I say keep doing what you are doing for as long as you can. There is no reason to go to cow's milk until you have to.
