Milk Sensitivity +ear infections =any connection???

So my son just turned 1 and has been having constant ear infections since Sept.  Now the tube that they just put in in Nov is already blocked and needs to be replaced.  He has this horrible thick fluid that comes out of his ears.  Thinking back it was in September that I started my son on regular Similac from Alimentium (which he was on for a milk sensitivity problem since 2 months).  He bms have been fine since the formula switch, but he has been very phlemy (runny nose, and now with the tubes, ear drainage).  Do you think that the runny nose could be allergy related?

TIA!

Re: Milk Sensitivity +ear infections =any connection???

  • Maybe? My ds has a milk sensitivity and was sick a ton the first year bc of daycare. Thankfully he only had maybe 1-2 EI ever. So it wasn't related in our house but doesn't mean it couldn't be.

  • my G'ma has a milk sensitivity and it would cause her to get really bad sinus drainage, a sinus headache.  she also gets some drainage in her ears.  Not fun at all.  I hope he feels better.

  • Yes, it could definitely be milk related.  I have a milk allergy, and I get a runny nose, itchy eyes, headaches and sneezing if I eat/drink milk.  When I used to have dairy on a regular basis, I had chronic sinus infections (and sometimes ear infections.  I'm on a nearly milk-free diet, and I have few symptoms now.  (By nearly, I don't avoid little bits in baked products or the occasional mashed potato.)

My niece has the same sort of allergy/sensitivity.  She developed a constant runny nose when my sister introduced milk to her diet.  It went away when the milk went away.

It would be fairly easy to determine if this is your son's problem.  If you put him on a milk-free diet, he should improve within 2-3 weeks.  It does take some time to get it out of your system.  It takes me 4-5 days to get back to normal if I cheat and have some real ice cream.
