WWYD - re: ordering BM dress?

So, tonight we are going shopping to pick out dresses for my sister's wedding in June.  So after all this crap with the two m/c's I really don't know what to do about ordering the dress.  Assuming my dr doesn't tell us that we need to wait for any reason to TTC again, I am hoping that I will be pg at her wedding.

But since I don't have any idea how it will all work out, I don't know if I want to assume that I am going to need a maternity dress, or if I should just order a regular dress a couple of sizes bigger?  If I am doing my pregnancy math correctly, I figure that the most pg I could possibly be in her wedding would be around 20ish weeks.  (And that would assume getting pg in January and having a healthy pregnancy).

So I don't really know how to handle the situation.  My sister knows about everything that we have been through and is really laid back about the whole situation - she is fine with me wearing a different dress, different color, whatever I have to do.  But I really just have NO idea what to do about what size to order.

Any thoughts? Anyone been in this situation before and have any words of wisdom for me? :)

Whoa...sorry this turned into a novel!  Embarrassed  Thanks for listening!

Re: WWYD - re: ordering BM dress?

  • first, sorry to hear about your mc... I was OOT for a few days and am just catching up on posts :(

As far as the dress, I would wait until the latest possible date to order it. BM dresses usually take a couple of months max to come in, right? Unless they are special order or something. That way you can have a better idea of where you will be in June.

  • I was in a wedding this past October at 17wks pregnant.  I had to order my dress before we got our BFP.  Because I knew we were TTC I decided to order the dress one size larger.  I'm SO glad I did!  The dress fit perfect when I first put it on (two weeks before the wedding) but since I knew I would be growing still I had it let out a bit.

It's always easier to take it than let out so my suggestion is to go for a bit of extra room in the hope that you need it. :-)

ETA - even at 20 weeks I don't think you'd have to a specific maternity style dress.  As long as the dress isn't really form fitting you can probably wear the same as everyone else.

  • I would order it a couple of sizes larger (if you can't wait to order it) ...and maybe even some extra material if you can. A seamstress can either take it in or add on to it. Are you the MOH? With the extra material you could do a belly sash or something too.
  • I agree with waiting to order but I might consider looking at empire waisted dresses.

How much did your body change with Zoe? Breasts, hips, etc. This might be an indication about what size to order. When you do order maybe go up one additional size. Ask the store owners/staff I am sure they have some guidance to offer.

I have faith that you will be pregnant again by June with your sticky baby but if for some reason you are not do you want this dress to be a reminder of it? Do you want to be at a fitting saying to yourself "I should be..."

I know that this can't be easy for you to decide.

  • I would just do one size up and just ask when the latest is that you can order. 100% Honestly, I think you looked very (cute) and petite pg with Zoey- even the night before you had her, haha! You never got "huge", I wouldn't get the dress much bigger.

  • I agree with Melanie. Just do one size bigger.. i you do too much more than that and end up not being showing at all, it will be a big pain to take the dress in that much and it might not look right. Even if you are 20 weeks, which you might not be, it'll only be a little bump... and they can take the seams out some.

On a side note.. you are a GREAT sister to be picking out bridesmaid dresses today.. It would annoy me anyway this close to christmas.. and everything you are dealing with on top of it.. Tell your sister I told her she owes you a drink. :)
