Starting Solids Question

Did you wait right till 6 mo to start LO on solids? When you started LO on solids what did you start with? Pros/cons?

I read that it was good to start with bananas instead of ceral but DH's Aunt said not to start with something sweet because then they never end up liking non sweet things like their vegetables. WDYT?

Re: Starting Solids Question

  • we started Evan when he a little over 5 months w/ rice cereal. We gave that to him every morning for about a week (making it a little thicker each time) and then started introducing fruits. I think banana was the 1st fruit (and is his fav!) I've heard avacado is good to start w/ too (Evan hates them, and gags like crazy, but he will eat them mashed w/ bananas!!)

At first Evan liked sweeter things (squash, sweet pot, banana etc) Actually a lot of the veggies are sweeter and the fruits more tart/sour since there is no sugar added. It took him longer to get used to applesauce, pears, green beans.

DH's aunt is just giving you advice she heard from an old wife.  It is totally not true.  If fact giving LO something sweeter for a first food actually helps because they are more likely to enjoy eating.  Besides, breast milk is very sweet!  So if it were actually true then every breastfed kid would never eat their vegitables.

    Here are some helpful hint.

  • We started at 5 months with rice cereal. Our pedi recommended we start with that because it was the least likely to bring on a food allergy. We then moved on to the other cereals and started with sweet potatoes at 6 months.

As for the starting with fruits first - I don't think that really holds water. The orange veggies, which is what they suggest you start off with, are very sweet. There was a point where Ian liked the veggies better than the fruits.
