how much is too much spit up?

Cara spits up A LOT.  She spits up 24 hours a day, sometimes more than an hour after she's eaten.  Sometimes it's small amounts but usually it is quite a bit.  She and I had both had to change our clothes by 9:30 this morning.  Yesterday we went through 3 bibs because they were soaked through.  Lila was a spitter, but nothing like this.

She will sometimes fuss before she spits up, but not always and it doesn't seem to bother her when she's actually doing it.  Should I be worried or just invest in plastic clothes?

Re: how much is too much spit up?

  • Have you talked to your pedi about it?  Is she crying when she's spitting up?  Is she gaining weight well?  FWIW, my girls were "happy spitters".  Basically, they spit up 24/7 - after every feeding for sure and sometimes just randomly.  With DD#1, I had a rule that she had one outfit a day and when she soaked through that, I'd leave her in her diaper unless we were leaving the house but that was May/June in Texas so plenty warm.  Either way, check with your pedi to make sure it's not reflux or a food allergy.  My pedi said not to worry about it as long as the girls weren't crying/screaming when they spit up and they were gaining weight so we just dealt with it (and fully expect to again this time).
  • Both my twins had reflux.  DS was the spit up/vomit king.  He could spit up anytime, day or night, didn't matter when he'd had a bottle.  He wore a bib all day long for the first 15 mo of his life.  He never cried or fussed either (even after vomiting).  He was on zantac and prevacid until he was 15.5 mo old.

  • DD was the exact same way and I couldn't recall how much DS spit up when he was a baby, but MH was the one who pointed out that it wasn't the normal amount AND she was crying after feedings (particularly when we'd put her down flat).  Her pedi. said it was classic reflux and suggested thickened feedings and inclining her mattress.  However, the pedi. didn't suggest the correct amount of rice/milk ratio so it didn't improve much.  We took her to a Pedi. GI and she corrected the amount of rice per feeding, suggested we try Alimentum (I had just weaned DD early) AND prescribed Prevacid.  That was the magic trifecta for her and she's been doing MUCH better ever since!  I had NO idea what to do with a reflux baby since DS was so super easy and had no issues whatsoever.

  • If she's a happy spitter and gaining weight, I'd say she's fine. When it starts to hurt her, then I'd call the ped.
