If you have a passport....

what documents do you need when you apply?  I read online that a birth certificate and drivers license, but wanted to make sure I don't need anything else. I have to go tomorrow to apply for one for work travel, and I can't find my SS card.

It also says they will send the original docs to the passport agency for approval and they will return them to you in the mail.  So, wtf do you do without your driver's license?

Sorry, but I have no clue on passports.

 Thanks!

Re: If you have a passport....

  • It's been over 10 years since I applied for my original passport. I don't remember what documents I needed, but I'd trust the info given on the gov't site if that's where you're getting it. I also don't remember not having my driver's license for awhile, but a) I lived in Philly when I got it and didn't have a car and b) I think I applied for it directly at the passport agency there, so I'm not sure if they had to take my original documents or not.

I'm not much help. I just don't remember any more.

ETA: I had to renew my passport two years ago and I don't even remember what I had to do then. My memory is nonexistent these days.

  • I agree - I have had my passport since I was 6, so I have no clue on what you need, but trust what the government website tells you.

  • It's been two years since we got ours and I"m on meds that cause memory loss so I still won't be much help, lol, but I don't think we had to have SS cards b/c our twins didn't have theirs yet. Also- they just take copies of your drivers license and send those off. That, plus our pictures and our check is all we had to have, I'm pretty certain.

  • I don't have a passport yet, but will be getting one soon. But, I want to say that they should be able to just take copies of those things. I wouldn't think they would actually TAKE you driver's license! But, who knows....

  • Thanks. I wouldn't think so either, but that's what the website said, they take the originals, mail them to the passport agency for approval and send them back to you in the mail. I guess we'll see tomorrow.

    Thanks!

  • Call the post office and ask. They take care of passports there, so they should know.

  • I know I had to send the original birth certificate which freaked me out but they sent it back with my passport.  I seem to remember maybe a copy of my DL?  I can't remember that part.

  • They will take your actual birth certificate and will make a copy of your driver's license. They will mail your BC back with your passport, when it's issued.

  • original BC and copy of your license.

IF your name is different on your birth certificate, then you need an original certificate of how your changed your name, IE marriage license.

My original passport was BC and copy of license.  to renew I also had to send in an original marriage cert to have my name changed.

  • I work in passports, so I can help!

You have to submit your original birth cert -- make sure it is a certified copy with a raised seal. Some people go their whole lives with a birth cert that doesn't have a seal, so make sure yours does before you send it off.

You do NOT have to submit your marriage cert if a) the name on your license is your married name, b) the spouse listed on question #20 has the same last name as you and c) you are applying in the name listed on your license (your married surname).

You are responsible for bringing a clear photocopy of your license (front & back) to the acceptance agent. Sometimes they will be nice and copy it for you free of charge, but I wouldn't rely on that.

You also need 2 passport pictures.

Let me know if you have any questions!
