Question about Nurse Practitioners...

At the OB office I go to, they have three doctors and one NP. I've seen two of the doctors and I've seen the NP three times. I really like the NP. She makes me feel really comfortable and spends good time with me during my appointments. I was wondering if NP can actually deliver babies?

Re: Question about Nurse Practitioners...

  • Mine is also a certified  Midwife and could, but doesn't anymore. Unless they have other qualifications, it is my understanding that they can't.

  • I think they have to be certified in that area.  My sister is a NP and can not deliver babies.

  • Nurse Pracitioners need to be certified Nurse Midwives to deliver babies in my state.  It is a specific kind of nurse practitioner. In most states, NPs can write their own prescriptions, even open their own practices. My sister's kids were delivered by a certified nurse widwife. They often have more experience with deliveries than the OBs they work with. Just ask about the NP at your practice to find out.

  • I love my NP, but she told me right away that she would not be able to deliver the baby. Only the OB does :(
