Opinions on matching furniture

***I posted this on Nursery/ Baby Products and haven't gotten much response, so I figured I would try here too*****

What are your opinions on matching furniture?

Do you think it matters if the crib and dresser aren't exaclty the same color.  THe reason I ask is the crib that I ordered is wonderful, but the shade of brown is hard to match with other furniture.....do you think it matters?

Or do you think it is okay to have similar style furniture, that doesn't exaclty match it color?

Re: Opinions on matching furniture

  • It's all preference. I'd LOVE to have a matching furniture set, but I think that's because all the furniture we own is hand-me-down that does not match each other.

  • I am pretty lax about this.if you can cool,if not so be it.
  • I already have mismatching furniture in my house and it tends to drive me crazy. I wish it didn't, but I am my mother's daughter... So if it doesn't bother you, I don't think it matters, but since I already have issues with the furniture in my house, I want to get a matching set for the baby.

  • Having the same problem!! I am currently looking for a dresser or chest that I can sand and stain to match the crib better!! It doesn't matter that they won't look like they're from the same set, but I'd like for them to kinda match!

  • I believe in coordinating more than matching, the last is usually hard on the eyes and boring. Just look at decor magazines (not catalogs) and you'll see that furniture usually doesn't "match" but the whole ensenble looks great.

Again, I can see why people would wan it all to be the same color, so if that is a big deal for you just go with what makes you happy :)

  • for me . . i think that you could do really great y not completely matching.  .we have pieces in DD's room that doesn't match completely and it still all goes together . .
  • Going together, meaning style, period, etc. is more important than it being matchy/ matchy.  As long as it doesn't bother you, go for it.  Your nursery can still be BEAUTIFUL and you LO will love it anyway.

  • I don't think the colors need to match.  I'm using my grandmother's dresser, which was passed down to my mother and then me.  It used to be baby pink, but as a kid my mom and I stripped it and stained it a really pretty light cherry color.  The crib I'm getting is chocolate colored.  I don't care that they don't match.  They are similar in style and the dresser is sentimental.  I'm sure the baby wont know the difference either!
  • If you ever watch HGTV or any of the design shows, they use mismatched furniture all the time and it looks great  You just want it coordinated.
