2nd Trimester

Big u/s yesterday- good and scary news

We found out we are having a boy. The baby played with himself down there the whole time. Such a boy!

The radiologist came in to double check the techs measurements and they found a cyst on the babies brain (choroid Plexus cyst) They told me not to freak out but I cant help it. I had a terrible dream about it last night and it freaked me out even more and I just googled it which wasnt a good idea. I will probably have another u/s soon to double check. Hopefully its gone by then.

  • T&P...I remember reading a few bumbies had the same news at their big U/S and things turned out ok at their f/u's.

    Keep us posted.

  • At 16 weeks they found a cyst (they never told us the name of it) on our LO's brain and my doctor said its fairly common and by 20 weeks it was gone.

Did they act concerned about it?

Congrats on a boy! That hilarious he was playing with himself!

  • Thanks ladies. The tech just kept saying dont freak out. Not easy to do. I just cant wait to have a follow up to look again.   I was calmer yesterday until I had that dream last night. Everything went horribly wrong in the dream

  • I got the same news at my big u/s at 19 wks. Tech said every other measurement looked perfect so not to worry, she knew the dr wouldn't worry.  I've done fairly well with that most days, some days not so well.  I had my follow up appt with the doc on Wed and he wasn't concerned at all because every other measurement was right on.  I was still in the window for the quad screen so I did that. I got those results back today 1/7000 for Downs and 1/10000 for trisomy 18.  That has helped ease my mind a little.  I will have a follow up u/s in a month or so and hopefully see that they're gone.  Hope you're able to stay calm, I know it's not easy.
  • This happened to a good friend of mine. They made her wait 8 weeks for a f/u u/s! Everything was fine then.
  • This happened to me and DH. Unfortunately my ultrasound tech wasn't nearly as nice as yours. She completely freaked DH and I out. I have a follow up U/S on the 28. The high risk Doctor we saw told us that all of the other measurements looked good so we shouldn't worry. We will know more on the 28.

let us know how your follow up ultrasound goes.

  • We foung this out at our big u/s as well and yes it's very scary. Google is never your friend. They mention Trisomy 18 a lot but there are usually also a lot of posts from women that have had their little ones have them and then everything is okay. Since I have found out I have had 5 in real life friends/acquaintances tell me that they had them and they went away in their children. So odds are it's all okay it's just hard to wait and see I know!  I'll definetely be thinking of you and your son!
  • I hope everything is okay with your LO on your f/u visit!
  • Myy co-workers daughter had this and it went away. She is 3 now.

  • one of my friends relatives had this and the baby was just fine. we had echogenic focus on LOs heart and I freaked out too (the specialist didnt do much to ease my fears) I spoke to my Dr and she thinks our baby is just fine.

  • Sending thoughts and prayers your way!

  • At my 20wk U/S the doctor thought he saw a cyst on LO's kidney, and referred me to a high risk OB for a more detailed U/S. He didn't seem terribly alarmed (he just said he didn't know what it was and wanted it evaluated further), but of course that's the last thing you want to hear. I had another U/S a week later, and it turned out to be nothing. Bonus - I got some really clear new sonogram shots :)

It seems like these types of things show up a lot, and then go away by themselves or turn out to be nothing...so try not to stress too much and good luck at the follow up!

  • We had this news, too, at our 20 week u/s. Both of the cysts were gone by our 24 week level II u/s and all seems to be well. They weren't concerned about anything else on the u/s so I'm sure everything will be just fine. GL to you, too.

  • Lots of babies have these, and some people think it's just part of development for some babies.  The reason we see it so much more now is because U/S machines are so powerful.

My baby has an echogenic focus, which is very similar to the brain cyst as far as the indications for DS and Trisomy.  I am not worried at all.

  • A close friend had the same thing and they had her do an amnio. Everything was fine, and the cysts were reabsorbed before birth. T&P

  • I've told cara and auslyn that my niece had choroid plexus cysts and they disappreared and she is a healthy, beautiful 3 year old.

Try not to stress about it.

  • CPC's are seriously not a big deal.  Listen to your Aunty Heather on this one, as I spent my whole last pregnancy researching soft markers for Down Syndrome (a long story).  It's an incidental finding.
