Antidepressants during IVF?

After 4 months of counseling, my therapist suggested that I start antidepressants. This morning, at my PCP's office, I met with the physicians assistant who prescribed Cymbalta. I'm waiting for a call-back from my RE to get his approval before taking it. ?I've read that Cymbalta does cause birth defect and should be stopped prior to the 3rd trimester. Just wondering if anyone else has taken Cymbalta while TCC or is there another drug that is considered "safer" while TTC. Thanks.

Re: Antidepressants during IVF?

  • when i met with my ob for the first time he was going over the forms i filled out and i answered i had a history with depression and anxiety. he told me there are drugs safe to take during pregnancy so if i had any issues at all to speak up. he didn't go over which ones at that point, just that i had options should the situation arise.

good luck with your ivf, you know i am rooting for you!

  • I always thought zoloft was the pg aproved one.,,. Maybe even Prozac. The RE will know. I work with someone that takes paxil and switched to zoloft for both her pg's.

  • Prior to TTC, I was taking Celexa.  I talked with my ob/gyn and the biggest issue with Celexa and most antidepressants is after the baby is born.  I guess the baby kind of goes through a withdrawal and can be irritable.  But she hasn't really seen that in her patient's babies.  And it isn't a major concern to her.  I went ahead and stopped the Celexa.  And I miss being on it, especially when I am moody.  But I was on a low dose and figured I would be ok until after I have a baby.

And given that I am prone to depression, we are going to see how I am after I have a baby and dealing with post partum depression.  My ob says that there is not a connection with women who suffer from depression and those that have post partum depression - so that is a good thing.

Now, I would be careful with Paxil.  That med is a pain to get off.

  • I have been on antidepressants for many years and was told by my Psychiatrist that there are a lot of women who should and need to keep taking their meds while pregnant. Here is what I was told and researched Prozac ok bc been around a long time Zoloft ok Paxil-not great bc could cause heart problems. There is still always a small risk when taking any of them but some much much less. Again this is what I was told and looked into. I am not a Dr. Lol. For me Cymbalta seems too new and I wouldn't take it but again.. That is just me.
