Upstate NY Babies

Spent last night in L&D

As background... I have IBS as many of you might remember. Well, yesterday I started to not feel well at our department holiday lunch. We hadn't eaten yet so I thought it was hunger with a little IBS symptom on the side. As lunch progressed it just got worse. I barely ate anything and even tried some ginger ale to calm my stomach and release some gas but it didn't help.

I went home and laid down for a while and it was manageable but very uncomfortable. Then I went to the bathroom (#1) and my god was I in pain. I couldn't lay down, I couldn't stand up, I was just on my hands and knees rocking myself for comfort. DH was at work and can't always get his phone so I tried my mom. She has gallbladder issues when she was pregnant with me and was very nervous and said to call the doctor.

By the time the doctor got back to me (1+ hrs later) the pain had subsided slightly but she wanted me to come in for monitoring. So off to the hospital we go.

After 4 hours of monitoring, one pelvic exam and a gas-x type drug I was feeling better. She did want my gallbladder checked out this morning so I am just getting back from my u/s.

This is what I have learned. Pregnancy makes my IBS worse! I need stock in gas-x. I need to have a bag packed for the hospital starting yesterday Stick out tongue

It wasn't a horrible experience just not pleasant. I was having some very minor contractions about 40 mins apart and my cervix is apparently soft but closed. I don't think that I have any gallstones after the u/s but I guess it is good that they checked.

LO sounded great! HB was between 130-170 the entire time and the nurse said that the amount of changes in the HB was a good indicator of neurological health.

  • Oh no! I am glad it was just gas/IBS.. Pregnancy makes a lot of tummy issues worse. Baby has to keep cooking for a couple more months!

  • Melissa, I kept thinking about you and wondered what you must have felt like dealing with your gallbladder issues. Did you end up having surgery?

  • No, I haven't had the surgery. When i was pregnant, I was really careful with what I ate fat wise for awhile.. and it seemed to "calm" it enough where then I could go back to eating pretty normally.. Then after I delivered, I didn't have too many problems.. I have had a couple "minor" episodes, but it was just a little discomfort, nothing i couldn't say, work through.. I did have one MAJOR attack, the worst I had ever had, in July..I thought I was going to the ER that day, but it subsided and hasn't been back.

  • Glad to hear all is ok and baby is still cooking!
  • Glad to hear you are feeling better and baby is in good shape
  • I am glad you are feeling better and all is well with the baby.  I can totally relate on the tummy/bowel issue front.  It is no fun.  I have major bowel issues and with pregnancy they have gotten worse.  You don't know how many plans I have had to change or cancel due to them.  I feel for you.
  • Oh no! I'm so sorry you have to go through that. My friend has IBS - it's horrible for her normally, I can only imagine how bad it is when you're pregnant. Glad you're feeling better and that baby is OK.
