Hi Ladies,
DH and I are starting to discuss childcare options and we have no idea how much experienced and reputable nannies charge. In your experience, what should we expect when planning our budget? If it makes a difference, we are in North Dallas. Also, how do you go about finding a decent nanny? Thanks in advance.
Re: Average Nanny Cost?
Honestly the cost can really vary depending on what you are looking for, live-in, live-out, housekeeping, running errands, etc. You can go through a nanny agency where they do all the leg work (finding people, background checks) you just have to interview people, but be prepared to pay extra for that and many times the agency dictates how much you pay the nanny. Or you can post an ad or look for someone on a website like sittercity.com or care.com. IN that situation you will have to set up interviews and do a background check if you want it done.
We are planning on hiring a part time nanny to work about 20 hrs a week in our house. We will be looking on care.com mostly (easier to narrow down location). We are also looking at paying somewhere between $175-$200/week and paying every week even if they aren't here (i.e., Christmas break, Spring Break, both of which DH has off because he is a teacher). When I nannied I got paid like this and it seemed to work out well.
When I was researching this, I found the range in this area to be $8 - $15. As OP indicated...really depends on a number of things: experience, English proficiency, housekeeping, age, duties, etc.
We got our nanny by offering one of our daughter's day care/preschool teachers a job. She had been her teacher for a year and one day I asked if she wouldn't mind sharing with me what she is paid. I did the math of putting 2 into that school versus hiring her directly and found that for not much more, we could give her a nice raise, benefits (paid vacation and holidays, plus other perks).
Since she was already working in childcare and we knew her for over a year, I didn't have to worry about doing background checks.
I'm a nanny in the area and I get 10/hr.
A place I rec bookmarking and searching through is Care.com. You can search your area, get background checks, list what exactly you are looking for, and make a post for care givers to see to apply for you.
I was very lucky and met the families I work for through there. GL! I think care.com will really help. It did me! (And probably will in a few mths once we have our LO)
