Another Sleep Question

Ok I know we've had tons of posts on here lately about sleep questions/problems but I just need a refresher. DD has been a WONDERFUL sleeper since about 6 weeks. Pretty much sleeps 6-8 hours straight wakes up to feed then goes back to sleep for another 1-3 hours. Well almost two weeks ago we finally made the transition to her crib for bedtime (she has been taking naps in there for quite sometime, but not sleeping in there at night until recently), and ever since she has been sleeping horribly. She moves her arms a lot rubbing her face, etc and kind of wakes up whining, so we go in give her her pacifier if it has fallen out and hold onto her hands(which she loves and comforts her) and she'll fall back to sleep usually. But she's doing this sometimes every hour or so. Then the past week she's been waking up around 2 or 3 wide awake, so I've been feeding her and then putting her back down, which she then will sleep until 6 or 6:30.

I know many of you have had experiences like this, but remind me does it last for a long time? Do they eventually go back to STTN? Could this be due to her possibly teething? Do you think it's something with the crib?

Re: Another Sleep Question

  • A question - when you hear her at night, is she full out crying or maybe just making a whiney noise. That was the biggest thing to adjust to when ds got older. Sometimes he'd make a whiney noise, and I'd run in there to check on him, and he'd be asleep. I had to learn which noises required me to go in, otherwise I'd be there every hour, too (he's a noisy sleeper, even to this day).

OK, another question - is she moving around more during the day? When babies start moving/crawling/etc., they want to do it as much as possible because they're so excited about the new experience. That could be why she's waking up at night. I don't think it's the crib, it's just the age.

  • Evan did the same thing. He was sleeping from 7:30pm till 4 or 5 am, eat, go back down until 8am. Then all of a sudden he started waking around midnight, and would not go back to sleep unless I nursed him. I was afraid we were getting into a bad habit, but he eventually stopped. He didn't do it everynight, but it lasted about 2 or 3 weeks. Not sure why, just glad he's back to his old sleep habits! (and has actually dropped the 4am feeding too!) Hopefully the same will happen w/ your DD.

It may have to do w/ her crib, if she's just started sleeping in there. We didn't have an issue when we switched Evan to the crib, but he was still swaddled, so I think it helped that he still had that "close" feeling. It may take her a little getting used to.

  • michael was a great sleeper, sleeping through the night before he was three months old. he would make a little noise once or twice a night but 99% of the time all you had to do was pop the pacifier back in and he'd go right back to sleep.

then in recent weeks he started crying in the night- not his normal i need my pacifier whine- i mean full blown crying that turned into screaming if you didn't pick him up. and once you picked him up he would quiet right down, as if you flipped a switch, but then you couldn't put him down, as soon as his head hit the matress and you tried to let him go he would start crying again- not fun

mothers intuition kept telling me that he was doing this because he was cold. last week saturday i bought two fleece halo sleepsacks and we haven't had one of these crying/screaming incidents since (knock on wood!)

  • Ours lasted from 4 to 8 months.. that was many wakings per night.. and even now often times she'll wake up once a night and just need her pacifier back..In our case, it was not exclusively due to teething, but it may have been WORSE when she was teething.  I'm no help. I'm sorry..
