nursing vs bottle feeding follow-up

So I attempted nursing DD this afternoon, and she only took the breast for about 5 minutes. She keeps spitting it out and giving me a look like it tastes bad! Both with and without the shield. So I switched to bottle feeding, and she took 50 mLs. Of course, she had taken 80 mLs from the nurses 4 hours earlier, but 50 is more than she has taken from me so far, so I'll take it.

Re: nursing vs bottle feeding follow-up

  • 50mls is great!  I think DS only took around 30mls in the NICU.  But when he came home he took a bit more.
  • I think it's great you tried to BF, and super that she took 50 ml!  DS was finicky - sometimes he loved the breast, sometimes not.  DS didn't take 50 ml at one time until he had been home for a week or two.  That's great!

  • I noticed my son son would spit out when I breastfed and then realized that his tongue was up the whole time! It was so frustrating. He was nursing for 5 minuets and then I felt this wetness, sure enough it was dripping from his mouth. It's been tough trying to get his tongue down.

  • If LO is spitting out milk it could be for a few reasons I can think off the top of my head:

    1)  you might have a forceful let down (like me) I would literally choke the poor kid every time he tried to latch

    2)  he may be latching improperly

    3) he may betting  a lot in 5 minutes and he is done, it is more work for them to breastfeed than bottle feed.  When they are little like yours is it just tires them out.  My DS would nurse and then I would follow up with the bottle and he would never take as much.  When he started latching for longer we would weigh pre and post nursing and found that he was actually eating a lot.

I would call for a lactation consultation.  They really do helP!  GL!!

  • That is awesome!
