1st Trimester

Any runners on the board?

Are there any runners here? How have you been feeling during your pregnancy so far? Are you keeping up with your running at all? Have you had to slow down?

I'm still trying to run 20 miles a week, but Ive had to slow down a lot. I get tired much more quickly, and I force myself to take walking breaks when I start to get out of breath. It took me 48 minutes to run 4 miles on the gym treadmill this morning. Indifferent I feel so out of shape! But I tell myself that doing something is better than doing nothing.

Re: Any runners on the board?

  • I used to run pre-pregnancy.  Unfortulately, my body releases too much relaxin way too early and my hips are really unstable.  Walking can be painful.  I can't run again until late next summer :(

  • I ran pre-pregnancy too (15-20 miles a week usually).  But not since the m/s started.  I've lost too much weight as it is (15 pounds as of yesterday) and my doctor doesn't want me doing anything that burns too many calories until I can start gaining again.
  • I am running still.

I cut back from 70 miles a week to about 30 miles a week.

I feel fine.  My times are a bit slower, and I did a half-marathon on Thanksgiving about 15 minutes slower than my worst time...but I didn't really care.

I am just running 5 days instead of 6 and walking on Mondays and Thursdays.

Not saying your doctor is wrong, but just an FYI: running actually helps my m/s.

I've had it really bad {6-7 times a day vomiting pre-Zofran} and the exercise really helped settle my stomach.

  • I'm not permitted to run with twins, and it has been tough for me already, but I'm trying to find other forms of stress release.  I'm restricted to keeping my HR under 140 and not doing any exercise that has me on my feet for more than 15 min at a time.

I think you're right.  I haven't run much since BFP but on mornings when I can get out and at least walk I don't feel as sick.  I have a cracked rib too (ahh things they don't tell you: if you vomit hard enough and long enough you can crack a rib which will make future vomiting sessions even BETTER).  I think she was concerned about that combined with the calorie loss.  I have another appointment in 2 weeks and she said if my weight is steady or if I can gain a bit I should be able to start again.

Wow, that sounds really difficult! I would have a really hard time with that.
  • I run when I am not pregnant (20-30 miles/week), but with DS and now with this baby I get really dizzy if I run so I won't be running the entire pregnancy. I don't know why running does that, it just makes my head spin. I can do regular workouts (lunges, weights, etc) and I can ride a bike, it's just jogging that makes me dizzy.
  • I feel the exact same!  I've had to slow down quite a bit too.  I walk when I feel short of breath now...which seems to happen sooner than before I was pregnant.  I'm 7 weeks and have been struggling with motivation to run and I NEVER had a problem with that before.  Best of luck to you!
  • I'm still scared to run. Our little one was conceived on Thanksgiving right before we went and ran our 5 mile turkey trot. I'll probably start back up after the new year and take it slowly. I'm not one for cold and I hate the treadmill but that might be the best thing for me right now.
  • I jog for general exercise...I probably take three 3mile runs a week and then I play soccer too.  With my first pregnancy my heart rate became WAY too elevated when I would run so I could only walk. I would also be out of breath quite easily so even if I would have been able to run, I'm sure I would have had to tone it down a bit.

I'm hoping that this pregnancy will be different.  I've been feeling ok so far, but I'm only 5 weeks so I don't expect the real symptoms to kick in for a couple more weeks.

  • I used to run fairly often before bfp, but now I'm too tired to do much.  I'm still doing yoga but I'm really only doing some fast paced walking.  My hips and knees are a mess (maybe relaxin?) so I'm trying to be kind to them.  I'm averaging one run a week now.

  • Interesting - my midwife asked what I did for exercise and I told her I run 4 or 5 times a week, just a couple of miles. She asked if I'd mind switching to walking and I said no (as I haven't done anything due to m/s)  I'm 39 so maybe its an age thing.  I'm looking forward to running after LO is born - the only time my son who had terrible colic was quiet was in the jogging stroller.

EnnuiDC - I love your sushi ticker - I'm definitely on the countdown to eat sushi again.

  • I ran 20-25 miles a week prior to the pregnancy and have found it VERY hard to gather enough energy to run. I am still averaging 10-12 miles a week but that takes a lot of effort. I wish I could run more, I'm hoping that next week as I enter the 2nd trimester I will be able to! I ran a 5K on thanksgiving (with my dog so I didn't push it) and felt great! My midwife told me I could keep running as long as I didn't do intense speed workouts and to stop when I really started showing and my center of gravity is off.I live in Maine and the roads are icy so now I have to run on the treadmill. Boo!

Yeah, it has been extremely frustrating.  My husband and I are both runners/triathletes (he's waaaay more into it than I am) but I'm accustomed to being able to do tough workouts consistently.  I had to take 4 weeks off from working out for IVF but I thought I could start up once I got the BFP.  I know it will all be worth it in the end, but it has been the worst part of 1st tri for me so far.

  • I was a big runner pre-bfp, but after it took so long for me to get pregnant, I'm not willing to risk anything.  I'm sure it is safe, but mentally I can't do it.  I had switched to walking and prenatal yoga, but then m/s kicked in.  About a year ago I saw a woman running on the track when she was probably 6-7 months pregnant.  It was really cool, but again, not for me given my history.
  • I ran a decent amount before I got pg...I've always tried to have variety in my workouts. However, I've been SEVERLY lacking energy. I'll make it to the gym 4 times a week if I'm lucky. I've mainly been sticking to the elliptical and walking on an incline.

I tried to run the other day, and I can't because my boobs are so sore! It's terrible and frustrating. It was just too painful. I've never experienced such sensitivity.

At this point, a little working out is better than none!

  • I'm still running around the same distance as pre-pregnancy, but a LOT slower.  I run with a running group, and I can't even keep up with the slowest pacers.
  • I NEED motivation. I told myself the second I saw our LO I will get back on it (I just wanted to make sure everything looked ok). It's a love hate relationship for me and every time I step on the scale I think yikes!!

I ran about 10-15 miles/week religiously for the last 1 and a half.  I lost about 15 pounds just to prepare for bfp. However, since i move to NY I have dropped off with exercising especially when my new job started in september. I always saw myself as an exerciser while pregnant but theses last two weeks I have done Nothing. So i totally agree with you...I NEED motivation to get going...I feel like if I don't start I will be very unhappy with my overall weight gain.
