Which Hospital is best in Akron?

Just wondering if anyone has seen both Akron General and Akron City (Summa) hospitals and can tell me which one is nicer?  I just toured Akron General tonight and wasn't that impressed, but I haven't been to Summa yet.  Any opinions or past experiences you can share would be much appreciated.

 Thanks!

Katie

Re: Which Hospital is best in Akron?

  • What was wrong with General? I thought they were better than Summa. But it has been years since I have been to Summa.
  • Nothing really wrong with it, it just had a strange odor and the rooms seemed small.  I guess I was just spoiled with my first child where the rooms were like suites.  (I had my daughter in Lancaster, Ohio)  I talked to my doctor yesterday and he said that General would be his choice and is actually where his wife will deliver their child.  Summa may have nicer rooms, but the quality of care and the staff are more important.  Thanks for your reply:)

  • I delivered at Akron General.  I have no problem with either hospital.  I have been to both at various times.  For some reason, Akron City (Summa) gets a bad rap with some people.  But I have heard the maternity services are nice and that the food service is really wonderful there.  I was at General for 2 weeks (I was on bedrest for awhile prior to being induced).  The food was pretty good, but there is not much variety (especially if you have an extended stay).  I looooved all the nurses I had at General.  They all seemed to genuinely care.

So basically, I don't think you can go wrong either way!

    Best of luck to you!

  • I work at Akron General so I am biased. Im delivering there. I did a Labor and Delivery rotation 120 hours at Akron City. I really can say there is not that huge a difference between the two. Besides that a hospital is a hospital, it's not like a difference between a one star and five star hotel...when it comes to decor and room size you are not really going to be noticing too much, you'll definately be pre-occupied with more important things (like your new baby!). The lactation consultants at general are amazing and the nurses in post-partum and L&D all seem to be really helpful. I think that is more important than room size in the end.
  • Before I had my son, we toured both Akron General and Akron City. We preferred Akron General because the staff seemed super nice both times we toured and we liked the setup of it. It just seemed very 'comfortable' and less 'hospital-y' if that makes any sense. I chose Akron General and had a wonderful delivery experience there, even though it ended up as a c-section. The nurses were great, service was very good and I was even impressed by the food (for hospital food anyway).  :) We also liked that it's right next door to Akron Children's hospital so if anything went wrong (it didn't, luckily,) help would be swift. (Children's actually has a department at Akron General.)

My advice to you is to tour both and go with your gut. I've heard good and bad stories about both places, but you'll find that with any hospital. I'm sure City would be fine. We just happened to like General better.

  • My doctor delivers at both general and city....and she did say that the rooms at city are bigger, but the rooms at general are more "home-y." My sister-in-law delivered at general a year and a half ago, and I wasn't impressed with general either. Their post partum area seemed dark and dreary and I didn't think the rooms looked home-y. I like city better.
