Triplet moms, GD question?

Did you have GD? When did you find out? Were you able to control with diet or did you need meds?

During out TTC journey, i found out i am insulin  resistant.  So my body makes too much insulin.  I spoke to peri nurse about this and the facta i had DD a week early due to Pre-e. .
So this being said they sent me for my 2 hour glucose last week, i passed but numbers were very high so not i am scheudled for the 3 hour.  The peri nurse said i will most likely develop GD due to the amount of hormones the triplets send out.  Wondering if this is always the case.  I want to do whatever keeps them in there until (the end) hopefully of April..  Thanks!

Re: Triplet moms, GD question?

  • I had GD during my pregnancy. I was diagnosed at 26 weeks. My numbers were really high so they started me on insulin right away. The insulin helped, but my dosage seemed to change every few days. I guess as the babies grew they threw my bodies hormones off, and my insulin had to be increased. I started off at about 5 units three times a day, but at the time of delivery I was up to 27 units. Good news is, as soon as I delivered my numbers started to normalize, and everything has gone back to normal. But they do say I have a 20% chance of developing diabetes later in life. Anyways, hope you're doing well, and take care! :)

  • Nope! No GD for me. I didn't even score close on my tests!
  • I'm a twin mom and was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks. My OB's office told me they were expecting me to get it since they see so many MoMs with it (plus I'm almost 36yo). I tried to control it with diet for 1 week but that didn't work. My numbers kept getting higher. Same as pp - my insulin dosage increases every few days. I started insulin 12/2 and its already been increased 3 times. So far though, the babies look great. They are not large and the amniotic fluid levels are good - two of the problems they're at risk for. It does mean that I now have NSTs 2x/wk and a BPP once a week.
  • i didn't have it. i fully expected to, i'm such a sugar fiend. :P

  • I did fail my 1 hour test, but my 3 hours #'s came back so low the nurse brought me food to eat to get them up LOL I hope it doesn't give you trouble.

  • I am surprised they tested you so early since GD usually doesn't really start to show until later in the pregnancy (around 24-28 weeks). I was diagnosed around 25 weeks. My numbers weren't really bad, just a little high so they started me on the diet, but after 2 days my sugars got quite a bit higher and I was spilling keytones. So they told me to ditch the diet and go back to how I was eating. My sugars went back down and no keytones. No one can really explain it so maybe I am just weird.

Anyway, at this point I am on glyberide and my sugars are around the 90-low 100 range. It is a lot more common for mom's of multiples to develop GD because the placentas block insulin production. The more placentas you have, the worse the block.

    I hope this helped.

  • I was diagnosed with GD around 26 weeks.  I failed both the one hour and three hour tests by a few points.  I was on a restricted diet to start and testing my blood - but I was always well within range so I started eating normal again - which for me is a ton of carbs.  I was told that the GD diagnosis was hormonal.
