Woo hoo! I'm soooo happy that I passed this!
I have always had trouble with low iron (been turned away a few times when I went to donate blood). So a few weeks ago I called my Dr. b/c I was feeling run down and she said to start taking an OTC iron pill. Well I did and my iron levels were still low! So now I will be taking 2 iron pills in the a.m. on top of the prenatal I take at night! Yikes, I see constipation in my future!
Does anyone know if there is anything I should be aware of during delivery b/c of my low iron? I plan on asking my Dr. at my appt. next week. TIA!
Re: Passed my 1 hour glucose! But I'm anemic =(
Yay for passing the 1hr!
I had low iron while pregnant too, I took 1 pill a day until 6 weeks pp. It never came up during delivery/c section, so IDK. I am sure they would tell you, but it won't hurt to ask!
I was told to take it far apart from any calcium, as the calcium blocks the iron absorbtion. Not with milk, OJ w/ calcium, etc. I took it at night (that won't work since you take 2). I even took it apart from my prenatal since that had calcium in it. I was taking them together and they noticed my levels were still low, I took it with water before bed and my levels went right up by next appt!
My iron is also low but not low enough to put me on a supplement. My doctor is already worried about my constipation since I have IBS she doesn't want to make it any worse.
I am adding iron in my diet instead. Lot of green leafy veggies, beans, lentils etc. since I don't eat red meat.
As far as during delivery, I think that my doctor is worried about hemorrhaging and a need for a transfusion. I believe that this is a worst case scenario sort of fear.
Vitamin C does help with absorption so if you take the supplement with oj you should see an increase as well.
