Success after IF

If you did IVF - 2 questions

Hi Ladies. I'm happy to be able to join this board! I have two questions for those who did IVF:

1) I got switched from daily PIO to weekly (I also had the option of suppositories but have heard what a pain they are so opted for shots). I did the first weekly shot on Saturday and OMG it hurt sooo badly, much worse than the daily. It's castor oil instead of ethyl oleate, and a 22g instead of 25g needle. I also have a nastier bruise than I ever got before. Do you have experience with this, and if so, any advice?

2) My first u/s is scheduled for Dec. 28 with the RE. Should I also be scheduling an appointment with my regular OB?

Re: If you did IVF - 2 questions

  • Congrats to you and welcome! It's certainly a big adjustment being on this side - but there are great ladies here.

As for the weekly PIO I really don't know. Is there any way you can ask to stay on the daily shot since that seemed to be working better for you? I haven't heard of weekly shots and wasn't given the option of suppositories. I was on progesterone until 9weeks5days. My hips are still sore and a little numb so the shots are tough.

As far as OB appointments. I had my first two weeks after being released from the RE. My last RE appt was 8w5d and my first OB appt was 10w5d. If you think it will take you a while to get an appointment then I would definitely schedule one, but schedule it for after you'll be discharged from the RE I think.

     Good luck!

  • welcome!

not sure about the PIO.  I think I did it daily until 4wks then weekly or cold turkey....can't remember

2).  I would schedule after your first u/s with RE.  OB's like to see people around 8-10wks, but sometimes it takes a few weeks to get an appt if you ob is like mine.

  • I decided to keep using the shots on my second and successful IVF. Have you tried icing the area for a few minutes before you do the shots? It made a world of difference for me.

I haven't tried ice since the daily shots weren't so bad and I'd heard that it could make it harder to inject. But I think I might try it next time.

  • Congrats on your pregnancy.

I did daily PIO shots until I was 11 weeks pregnant after my IVF.  This pregnancy I was put on Crinone progesterone gel because my levels were low and honestly I would do that over the PIO anyday.  Yes, it can be a little messy but it's not all that bad.

I scheduled an appointment with my OB prior to having the ultrasound with my RE.  I knew I would be released once a heartbeat was confirmed so I decided to take a leap of faith and assume all would be well and went ahead and scheduled an appointment with my OB for as soon after the ultrasound as I could.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • No experience with the weekly shot - I bet it is a whopper though! I always did daily PIO or endometrin suppositories - did not mind either.

    My tricks for daily PIO:

Warm the filled syringe in a heating pad to thin it out a bit.

Ice the injection site for a few minutes before shot.

I would stand facing the kitchen counter and I would bend the knee of the side that I was getting the shot on to loosen the muscle.

Make sure the injection is given slllllllooooooooowwwwwly!

Massage injection site and then sit on a heating pad.

    Good luck!
