PW: nipple confusion

Savannah is starting to refuse bottles. Is there way to successfully BF and bottle feed? I don't want to interfer with H feeding them and obviously I don't want issues at the babysitters.

I really enjoy being able to BF at least 1-2 times a day.

Re: PW: nipple confusion

  • My DD went through a phase right around 3.5 months....we just kept trying (I had just gone back to work too) and she started taking one again eventually. We did have a couple weeks of heavy reverse cycling though.

  • I think a lot of babies do this at some time or another

    1) don't keep switching nipples to try and find one she likes, this just adds to the confusion, be consistent (not saying you do this - just mean don't start :)

    2) don't be in the room if A is trying to feed her

    3) make sure the milk is really really warm - or really cold - or exactly room temp.. whatever she likes.. try it different ways and see what she likes best (my babies like their breast milk very warm or they won't/wouldn't drink it)

    4) have babysitter or A make feedins as much like breastfeeding as possible - snuggle close and put a few fingers on her cheek (like pinky and ring figers of the hand holding the bottle) to mimic the feel of the breast on her cheek

    5) OR make it as little like bf'ing as possible... hold her facing away or far out on the lap...

some babies want to always feel like its nursing.. others need them to be different... try both ways and see what they like.

also no matter what else is going when you put the bottle in her mouth touch it and hold it up on the roof of her mouth - that makes it harder to push out with her tongue and more likely to want to suck

  • DD really hates bottles and prefers to just wait it out until I'm home -- which is a PITA since I'm back at work.  But she will take a couple of ounces here and there to make it through the day.  But your LOs have always taken both breast and bottle right?  I'm surprised that they would start showing a preference now.  One thing that our LC recommended was to increase the nipple size -- even though you don't normally do that with BF babies - because my flow was so strong that DD preferred it to a trickle.  Just a thought.  GL!

This is what everyone is suggesting. I don't want to go buy new bottles!

yeah, everyone else is wrong LOL.  she's always taken what you are using... she just wants to nurse and is gonna pitch a fit with any nipple/bottle till she gets over it.

  • She is stubborn like her momma:) She BF's like a champ though.
