Why does my kid like to sleep face down?

He is keeping me up at night! i have no idea how I would function without the video monitor.....I would be in his room keeping him up all night!

He likes to sleep on his belly, and easily rolls from back to front and vise versa. He often falls asleep with his face straight down! I watch him, and if he seems totally alseep I go and flip him over....which usually wakes him. I have no worries about him on his belly, but the face down thing scares the crap out of me!

  • Face down would scare me too.  But if it is just the hard mattress and fitted sheet, then if you picture it, there is still plenty of room to breathe.  It would be bad though if it was on top of a fluffy blanket.  Can you just move his head to the side instead of totally flipping him over?  Maybe that won't wake him up.

  • Rosie did the same exact thing when she first started rolling over and sleeping on her belly. I did a ton if googling when she first started doing it because I was so scared about it. What I read is that even if they sleep face down they can still breathe because of how their noses are structured. It's like with breastfeeding where they say to put the baby's nose right against your breast. They can still breathe that way because of their noses. Rosie still sleeps like this, but not nearly as often as she used to.
  • Gavin went through a phase of doing this, too, and I know how scary it can be.  But, like pp said, I'm sure he's fine.  He'll be able to breathe, and he is able to move his head and roll if he can't.  But, I'm sure you still won't be able to relax....I was right there with you :)
