Breast Pumps?

I was wondering if hospitals rented these out? I will ask my doctor about it during my next appointment, but wanted to get this boards advice. I would assume if they did rent them out that they would be very safe and in very good quality? I can't believe how expensive they are and would hate to waste all of that money on something if I ended up having problems with pumping and not using it.

Thx!

Re: Breast Pumps?

  • I had a c-section and used a hospital pump while I was in hospital. And yes the hospital pumps were available for rental. They were free if your babies were in the NICU, and then once the babies went home it was $4.00 a day. The pump they had available at my hospital was the Medela Symphony, it was a great pump, and would highly recommend it. HTH! :)
  • It depends on your hospital. Mine did not rent out breast pumps but there is a medical supply store in town that you can rent from.  I would definitly check around. I believe that Babies r us sometimes rents professional grade pumps as well.

    Good luck

  • Our hospital rents out the Medela Symphony for $75/month plus the initial cost of purchasing the attachments (~$55).  The lactation consultant I spoke to at a breast feeding class highly recommended using a hospital grade pump for the first month or two to establish my milk supply and then once the babies are better latchers and feeders, switching to breast feeding and using a Medela non-hospital grade pump (e.g., Freestyle).

I'm planning on following her advice and hoping it goes well!

  • Haven't done it yet, but I've heard some insurance companies will pay for a pump for you.

  • my hospital didnt rent them, but they did give me a large list of places in town that do. the rentable one (hospital grade) are meant to be rented so the parts are all new and so sanitary issues dont exsist like they would for a used pump. the hospital gave me the parts (well i am sure i was charged for them one way or another). they are also more powerful making pumping slightly quicker. i would rent one and see if you use it. if you do then you might want to invest in buying your own (costly). mine is the medela lactina and it cost me $48/mo. which i would rather do then drop $300 + dollars on one because we arent having any more children.
  • Thanks ladies. I will def. hold off on adding one to my future registry. I would much rather rent one at the beg vs. buying one!  I appreciate all the responses. :-)
