Baby Names

Ariston...

I found this boy name that I am really starting to like. (Apparently its Greek for "the best" and was Plato's father's name.)

I like Ariston Seth Ivy or Ariston Kale Ivy but those are just initial thoughts.

However, my problems are:

1. I am worried people will try to make it into Harrison or something when hey says his name since they've likely never heard it.

2. It doesn't lend itself to a nickname and my family will come up with SOMETHING because some of them will NOT use three syllables.

What do you think? Do you like it? Any nickname thoughts?

Re: Ariston...

  • It is nms, honestly.  It made me think of a really snotty, stuck up kid.  Maybe I'm just associating with "aristocrat" but they have the same stem and it does mean "the best."  I'm just not a huge fan.

Of your combos, I like Ariston Seth better.

  • I think Ariston is ok.  I like it paired with Kale as the middle name.  I do think that people will respond a bit different to it since it is an uncommon name.  The only nn I can think of is Ari.

  • It reminded me of those people naming their daughters "Aniston" which is just odd.

I think you'll be setting him up for alot of confusion.  And the nn "Ari".

  • i like seth better for mn

    ari for nn

  • I think Ari is good nn for it, although the name is NMS. I like Seth for a mn MUCH better than Kale. Kale = lettuce.

  • I like Ariston and I'd say people will call him Ari for nn. If you go with Cale spell it with a C. K is the actual lettuce. Also, Ivy? Is that your last name? Or a middle name you want to use? If it's a mn I wouldn't do it. Ivy is very feminine.
  • NMS at all.

  • Sounds like it was the root of Aristotle...which sounds awfully pretentious!

  • I believe Aris would be the nickname, I think it's a pretty traditional Greek name.
  • I do not like it.

I prefer Ariston Seth over Ariston Kale.

  • I like it, surprisingly.

I've had to spell and correct people saying/spelling my name all my life. Not that big a deal most of the time, but occassionaly it gets annoying (if I happen to meet a lot of people in a short period of time.

NN are NMS. My first thought is Ari, but I've seen that used for a lot of girls lately. I would tell my family to call him by his name or don't call him at all.

FWIW, I like Seth better as the MN.

  • Are you sure you're pronouncing it correctly? It doesn't sound like Harrison at all.

It sounds like ARE-is-ton, not AIR-is-ton. The nn Ari (ARE-ee) is pretty intuitive and really cute.
