1st Trimester

bloodwork..

Hi ladies !!! I'm starting to psych myself out about the bloodwork I have to go for tomorrow. My 1st dr appt is on Wed so I have to go tomorrow for all of the tests. I have this horrible anxiety about getting blood drawn. Everytime I go I either pass out or get sick. The doctor said they will lay me down when they do it, but thats not really helping.

Sooo .. does anyone know about how long it took for theirs?? Any "oh it was nothing" are welcomed!! Yikes .. I hope I get over this soon!!

Re: bloodwork..

  • they took 3 small vials...  3 mins tops?  yeah, really no big deal!

  • Oh it was nothing....seriously.  I hate getting blood drawn- they always miss and poke around.  I had a great experience and the tech was fast.  there were several vials but it was over quick.  Good luck!
  • I'm the same way- the last time I had to get bloodwork done I passed out... I was super nervous for this time but my tech was really quick- it literally took like 3 minutes to fill up 4 vials and I was fine.  No worries!  Bring some juice with you and don't stand up too quickly afterwards.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you thank you !!!! I just keep thinking .. no matter what I HAVE to get this done to have a baby. Strangest thing is the thought of giving birth doesnt really bother me .. getting an IV does. Crazy I know!
  • They took 3 smile vials for me. It was honestly 5 minutes or less. Not painful, just a poke. I even hate needles and it really wasnt bad at all.

I don't mind my blood getting drawn.

I LOVE giving blood to the red cross so I'm very used to it.

  • I had 7 tubes of blood taken. It only took 1-2 minutes though since I had a good fast supply that day:)
  • Ask for a butterfly needle - they had to fill 8 tubes for me, but if you request the small needle - you really don't feel it other than the first prick!

  • I had 7 vials (4 large and 3 small) and even that only took a few minutes with a butterfly needle.  It was really quick since they just switch out the tubes and the line stays in.  You'll be fine.  Big Smile

  • haha .. ok I feel like I can do it ... I'll post my results tomorrow and let everyone know if I made it or not LOL
  • I hate it too! It was pretty painless. I just kept thinking you have to do this for LO. Plus, just think about how great you'll feel after it's over. I get a huge rush of endorphins and feel like I'm on cloud nine.
  • I had so much blood taken when I was pregnant with ds, due to low iron - go figure, that they started taking it off the top of my hands, since they ran out of places on my arm.  Trust me, this won't hurt a bit.  They'll probably use a butterfly needle and you won't even feel it.  I had so many pokes and pricks when I had ds, ivs, shots, blood tests, that if I was needle phobic before, I'm not now.

After having a baby, you'll discover that making it through childbirth, a blood test won't be anything.  Good luck!

  • I am usually the worst when it comes to getting blood drawn, and it really wasn't bad, I swear.  The girl who drew the blood was really nice and distracted me-- she drew 5 vials, and I felt fine (usually I feel dizzy after).  You'll be great!

  • this is how it was with my first pregnancy too...i havent had my 1st ob appointment for this pregnancy yet.

But i was the same way as you, i freaked out anytime i needed to give blood or a needle was involved, especially that first appointment. But i promise its nothing, just a little pinch for a second...dont look and think about something else or try to have a conversation with the nurse to help pass time! You'll be fine!
