Jumpers and exercausers

What is the deal with these?  I see references to people on the bump saying they are not safe.  I have heard the risk of the walkers going down the stairs with the kid in them.  But is there something else?

Re: Jumpers and exercausers

  • I have never heard that they aren't safe.  I have heard they aren't very good for babies, especially when babies are put in them too early.  Very young babies, before 5-6 months I think, shouldn't be supported by their 'crotch' because it puts too much pressure on their spine.  Also, they are NOT getting stronger or learning how their bodies work when they spend too much time in them.  It takes away from time that should be spent rolling around on the floor.

I use a jumperoo.  Both kids loved the thing!  But they never spend more than a half hour a day in it.  In fact Brianna is in it right now laughing at me.

  • OH, doorway jumpers aren't considered safe!  If the jumper latch doesn't fail, sometimes the molding holding it in can fail and send the top of the jumper flying down to babies head.  Most of us were in these as babies, but many many babies have died in those.

Ugh, I had heard that the doorway jumpers were not safe, but assumed it was because people put them in the doorways that had stairs.  So I got one anyway thinking I would just put it in our second bedroom doorway.  Bummer, maybe I can still return it.

  • Not sure how accurate pp is in "many, many" babies have died from doorways jumpers. I researched this a long time ago - and just again real quick and have found nothing on this. The only thing I see coming up repeatedly is the type of doorway jumper with toys - and it was recalled because a baby detached the toy and choked on it.

Evan has a doorway jumper and loves it - we have a large opening (8+ feet wide) between our dining and living room and so we have it there. It is a lifesaver and I don't know what we would do without it!! Some nights - still - it is the only thing that can keep him contained so I can make dinner. I have never seen a floor-type jumper that didn't look flimsy or as entertaining as the one he has now.

But if anyone sees an article about these deaths - please post it!

  • We have the fisher price rainforest jumperoo and T absolutely LOVES it!! To me the doorway ones aren't as entertaining because they don't have things attached to them for them to play with. Her's has lots of things for her to play with and also has lights that light up when she touches certain things, and she loves lights!
